This is a LAX question for Obed

Obed®
How much do the LAX tournaments cost ? How many matches in a weekend ?
Do they have the overpriced customizeable t-shirt people ? What about the team photo nazis ?
DO they also "require" you to stay in certain hotels ?
Just trying to see that soccer parents are the only ones getting rolled

Basically, you pay the club team coach an amount

that's more than I've spent on cars for the season, and they, in turn, pay the entry fee for the tournaments. From what little I've seen on that side of the fence, most are $1000+ per team entry fee.
Then there's travel and yes some tournaments do "stay to play" where you have to stay in their overpriced crap hotels. I usually ignore that and no ramifications so far. This past fall saw two trips to Baltimore, one to Tampa, and one to Atlanta, and I'm guessing all in it was $5k. I will be the first to admit I was laughing at people like myself barely a couple years ago, but she's really good, plays goalie so she's a bigger fish in a smaller talent pond, and has gotten multiple recruiting contacts from legit college coaches in the past month or two based on her play in those tournaments. If she were just a casual player or had no chance of sniffing the next level, we wouldn't be doing it, but from what I can tell so far, a total investment of $10-15k total over the next couple years should net me $15-20k per year at a minimum in scholly money, so it makes sense financially and she's happy to boot, win-win.

Clemson is too smart

Let’s see....field a team that can play on Riggs and needs no additional facilities or add a softball team that needs a whole new stadium that’s only good for softball......
Last year thought their club team was #1 in the country so maybe there’s hope.

and that's assuming the school is fully funded.
They can be haaaard to come by. And being a GREAT (relative to others at that school) student is almost a requirement.
$15-$20k minimum in schollies is a tall athletic ask, in particular for females.

Goalie.
Not a ton of good ones out there, and highest percent of scholly money goes to goalies and face-off specialists. She's been fortunate to be mentored by a few D1 players over the years and her current club coach is connected out the wazoo with D1 schools. Since she's a freshman only D3 can contact her right now, but she got 5 direct e-mails from coaches after the national tournament in Tampa in November. I hear what you're saying and I appreciate it---I promise I'm a realist and not some overly proud, blinders-on vicarious living Dad. So far so good, and I actually can't really believe it either.

Just, buyer beware on schollies though. And yes LAX is I'm sure different when talking about a goalie.

Same for the daughter's competitive cheer team
Jan 21, 2021, 3:54 PM

I pay way more money per month that I'd like. But entry fees are all handled by the cheer gym as part of the fees they collect. All for the privilege of 2 three-minute long performances in a weekend.
Oh, but my daughter's on 2 teams, so I pay (almost) double. Some of the gym usage fees I only pay once.
There are several "stay to play" competitions. The only way to be exempt from staying in the sponsored hotel is if you're staying with a blood relative family or if you can get a hotel room purely on points. The benefits of having traveled to LA every other week for 2+ years is having Hilton points out the wazoo.
And the cheer competitions have the t-shirts. And the photos. And BOWS. My daughter has more friggin' cheer bows that any single, sane person should own. And those things aren't cheap.
But at the end of the day, it makes her happy. So I guess it makes me happy, but my wallet sad.

Biden's Executive Order on Preventing and Combating Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity or Sexual Orientation...
From what I hear, this will force colleges to allow all sorts of transvertites, shemales, men with long hair, people with both parts, people with neither parts to play on the female teams, so unless she can hang with the "IT'S MA'AM!" type on the LAX field, she may be left out.
Maybe for once Clemson will field a decent women's basketball team though... if they let the mens team grow their hair out.

How do y'all mentally prepare for these weekends?

Is there typically some fun drama associated with over bearing parents? Is there a group of parents that shows up drunk? What would be your #1 tip to a parent trying to avoid travel youth sports at all cost?

rest. I'm an extrovert by nature, but not at these things. I stand on the sideline by myself watching at games and practice, stay at different hotels than the rest of the parents, and never, ever accept a dinner invite to join the other parents for dinner.
I swear, at least 75% of the parents there act like it's a long weekend trip for themselves with the minor inconvenience of having to attend a lacrosse game or two.
To answer your question though, pick something that has zero way of measuring the best, and or zero competitions to determine skill level. Like maybe teach your kid whittling, or treehouse building. Of course, but the time yours is 15, there will undoubtedly be the "World Whittling Federation Winter Nationals at Disney World!" or some crap. If there's a way to make a buck off of kids or overly-competitive parents, someone will find it. In my situation, she's fantastic at a bougie Yankee sport, so you have to go where the bougie Yankees play and the college coaches watch.

It's the weekend of family time where we're all pissed off after driving 3 hours to sit in 95 degree weather with other pissed off parents we don't like that I'm worried about.

Usually, I am going to a place I know a bunch of coaches or a place I know someone. Usually we will get together and hang out. I've done that with stubborn_tiger®, Tharealdonjuan, I've all but begged Greenr. Met up with RH Tig at an acual MELLOW MUSHROOM on one trip. I usually go to a tournament in Savannah, because I lvoe Savannah.
So, in summary, nothing you'd like Lakebum1®, except the drinking

Come weekends, I don't really want to talk to or hangout with groups of people. At all. Unless their interests align closely with mine, and it's no more than 4-6 people at a time.
You know what else I do all week? Drive on the interstate. There are days I'd rather get AIDS than drive another mile on I-85.
