Maybe somebody can help me understand this from Rivals--

Aug 7, 2012, 11:11 AM

We have 17 recruits listed. One 5 star, seven 4 stars and an average rating of 3.5 per recruit.

FSU has 17 recruits listed. Zero 5 stars, 8 4 stars and an average rating of 3.47 per recruit.

Our total is 1777 points good for 13th place.
Theirs is 1854 points good for 12th place.

Honest question, what am i missing ?

Easy, that these recruiting ratings dont mean jack. These bozos rate who they want to highly whether it means anything or not

I get subjectivity( whoa) on individuals..

Aug 7, 2012, 11:18 AM

But it seems to me like somebody can write a program with proper math to then add up the ratings ??

(( i sounded like Jesse Palmer there for a minute..physicality, negativity, intangibility, SEC slantibility))

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

i've wondered for a long time how they get their rankings

Aug 7, 2012, 11:14 AM

with the information at hand... doesn't make sense to me

Even though I think all rankings are worthless. I think having an unranked commit is what is bringing the number down according to Rivals.

You're not accounting for the FSU bonus they start out with***

As many above said, the rankings are really worthless to me.

Aug 7, 2012, 11:22 AM

However, the only class ranking I care at all about is the one from ESPN. That's not to say I think they are the most accurate, but they will be on TV all day on signing day talking about the teams with the highest ranked classes in their rankings. That is great publicity for Clemson and so the only ranking I really care about.

Unranked commit is the answer

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Looks like the 3.50 number on their site is inaccurate...

Aug 7, 2012, 11:26 AM

If you run the numbers, our avg stars rating is actually more like 3.41.

That being said, you're splitting hairs between the two classes. I trust the coach's ability to recognize talent moreso than these recruiting "gurus." I also trust our coach's recognition of talent more than FSU's. Look at how highly rated their classes have been of late and look what they've done with it.

Not all 3,4,5 stars have the same point value.

Aug 7, 2012, 11:32 AM

The average for our class is around 104. As far as I know they don't advertise the individual values for the recruits anywhere.

Robinson probabaly worth a few more points than Williams even though they're both 4 stars.

Aug 7, 2012, 12:07 PM

its because not all 4 and 5 stars are rated equally. You'll notice when you look at them there are not just star rankings, but rivals rankings. For example Dorian O'Daniel is a 4 star, just like DeMarcus Robinson, but O'Daniel is a 6.0 Rivals ranking, and Robinson is only a 5.9. Therefore they rate O'Daniel higher than Robinson even though they are both 4 stars

I think they also take into account the balance of the class. As a ridiculous example.....if we had 17 four star receivers, that would be worth less than 17 four stars spread among the various positions.

Ultimately its still completely subjective.

No. ESPN is the only service that does ranking off of needs and balance. All other services are just a point based system.

Recruiting should be evaluated on...

Aug 7, 2012, 12:40 PM

Did you get people with skills you need?
Were these people also recruited by other top programs?

IF the answer is yes to these, then you're OK.
