I'm sure it's more efficient to use that land for banana farming as opposed to literally anything else.

Well they do produce a bunch of pineapples there so unless there's something about soil bananas dont like no reason they couldn't produce bananas as well.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We consume 10X the amount of pineapples that we grow

That gap is more than double for bananas. We don't have the ability to grow all that we use.

2025 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe Americans can have 2 pineapples instead of 30.

Yeah, it really shouldn't be a problem to increase banana production

Yes, we make about 6.7 million pounds of bananas with most of that coming from Hawaii. Now we consume 6.4 billion pounds of bananas.

Definitely feel like Hawaii and southern Florida have enough capacity to ramp 10000% production, hurr.

After we clearcut the southern tip of Florida, and Texas, and all of Hawaii to grow 5-10% of our banana consumption, we still have those pesky central American pineapples to reclaim.

Guess oranges are out of the question.

We grow 4.7 MILLION pounds of bananas in the US (mostly in Hawaii). The average American consumes 26lbs of bananas yearly, per capita. We imported 10.2 BILLION pounds of bananas in 2023.

Since there is no domestic way to supply our banana consumption, the tariff is simply a tax, as we will still obviously import them because we have to.

This is why tariffs are USUALLY targeted and highly specific for crops/items we grow/produce in abundance, because that's less stupid than blanket tariffs, smart in fact.

We left smart long ago.

The U.S. consumes 6.4 BILLION pounds of bananas annually. It produces about 15 MILLION pounds a year.

I can’t stand it. I can’t stand that someone comes to this board with so juvenile a response as to say “Er…uhhh…I saw a banana tree in Hawaii…sooooo…we should be all set.”

I mean really. Your thought is to simply increase our banana production by over 400x?

The commission will hire 80,000 county extension agents to help farmers with their bananas.

Isn't that going to make the cost of my banana go from about 27 cents to 30 cents?

The tariff if we sell 10 million bananas going to net us 10.3 million?

See no need to cut spending, pass the BBB
