Back in March I signed up for an American Express card to get 70K Delta sky miles. In order to get those miles, I have to spend $3,000 in 6 months. I kind of wanted to get those miles sooner though, so I can fly to the Bahamas or somewhere cool for free later this summer.

However, Amex won't do balance transfers, cash advances, or checks, so I can't for example, make my house payment with it because my mortgage company won't accept a credit card. I actually have to buy stuff...but I don't think I'll buy $3K worth of stuff in 6 months.

What do jounge? Any ideas to get around this?

And you can thank my father for no longer having nice things. He played the ultimate game back in the 80's, so well it can't be played the same way anymore.

3 weeks of every month his week would look like NYC on Monday, Chicago on Tuesday, Phoenix on Wed, Seattle on Thurs, Miami on Fri, then home. Do this for a year. For 10+ years actually.

Now......Be sure to expense ALL OF THIS, rule #1. Get an Amex card, buy all hotels, airfare, food, meals entertaining customers, strip clubs, etc. and rentals on Amex card. Amex points, CHECK. Only stay at a Hyatt or Marriott, points there, CHECK. Only use Hertz or Avis, points there, CHECK. Only fly Delta or Eastern, points there, CHECK.

So this allowed us, twice per year, to take a week-long vacation anywhere on earth, where Eastern, Delta, or an affiliated airline flew. We stayed at a Marriott, Hyatt, or affiliated hotel or resort. Rental cars were free. And if there was an issue, there were always AMEX points to spend if there wasn't a Marriott, or no airline flew there.

At one time dad had over 2 million miles on Eastern and over 1 million on Delta. We could have taken 30 of our friends on a week-long European vacation and only pay for food and misc stuff. And this is why I've been to England, France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Greece, Spain, Gibraltar, Austria, Morocco, Switzerland, Mexico, Canada, Belize, Guatemala, St. Martin, St. Lucia, Barbados, Australia, and the Netherlands. And my dad, had been to every single US state plus this, and Michigan probably 100 times. And the best part was the Crown Room, and the Ionosphere Club in the airports. Free goldfish and drinks and pretzels while you wait on comfortable couches watching TV. Met Strom Thurmond once in the Crown Room in ATL waiting on a flight. I was like 10yo maybe.

Like I said, this stuff doesn't fly anymore, pun very much intended.

one time. last year when my wife decided last minute to fly to HHI. Instead of using delta points, I paid for a southwest ticket. I now have a SW card and bought this year's on points.

also b/c southwest is an airline for the poors, so you can't use amex points.

I had over a million sky miles until our trip to St. Lucia. what sucks is living in Nash and not wanting a layover with a 2 yr old and a 1 yr old.

over a week in free days of car rentals through National.

3 free night certs w/ marriott + half a million points.

it still works like this haha, except now you can't "technically" take your customers to strip clubs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Most companies now don't fly people that much anymore.

I know same company stopped flying salesmen around the country about the time dad left. Had a cousin who continued to work there, and he flew enough to earn some points, but nowhere on the level dad had.

And the points buy less than they used to, another thing that's changed. I remember going to Europe (party of 3) for like 30-40K points.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-tiggity-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I completely agree with the points thing

May 23, 2024, 10:58 AM
Reply

the final nail in that coffin was Marriott acquiring Starwood. Their points conversion ratio was so good. Now Marriott and Hilton basically have a duopoloy and they both suck. But once you're in, you're in.

I certainly travel way less than I did, and I'm very thankful of that. There's still people in my industry who travel every week. All of my buddies still in consulting are on the road M - R every week.

The burnout and losing of resources probably did it more than anything. Idk how guys do it, going on 20 - 25 years just straight on the road week in week out. It almost killed me, which is why I got out of it.

I had the "perfect storm" of quitting right before covid. then had 2 kids. so I have all these points saved up and not many opportunities to use them.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, yeah.

I don't need an Amex card, and had they not offered the sky miles, I wouldn't have signed up for it. When I signed up for it I figured I'd make a house payment with it, knock out the spend requirements ASAP and use the sky miles as a backup method to get to the Keys this year in case I didn't tow my boat down there. Well, I'm not going to the keys because work, and still have the card, so since I have the ability to earn the miles, I might as well get them and use them for something.

The point of the whole post that I should have better explained was how to get the mileage easier without changing everything in my life (all my existing auto-pays etc) to get the mileage.
As for your dad doing that back in the day--he wasn't the only one. There were a lot of people who did exactly what he did. And he nor they didn't break it--its was just an unsustainable reward model made by the airlines and hotels.

I have a GM Card that I got literally about 20 years ago. I don't use it often now, but I did use the card points to buy an extended warranty one time. Used to be that every dollar you spent on the card was equal to a point, and that up to a certain amount like $1500 or $2000 (whatever the promo was at the time), GM would allow you to knock that much off the price of a new car, or something at the dealership (like an extended warranty). They have completely changed that point allocation model now though. I don't know how much card spending it would take to get the max of $1500 or $2000 off a new truck (whatever they will allow this month) but it has to be close to $10,000. I guess the old point allocations were just unsustainable.

He immediately proceeded to max it out, and he just kept paying the minimum. He graduated with student debt and a 10K credit card debt.

FFWD two or three years. SAME friend, presumably had paid off his card and became a mortgage broker, tried to sell me a sub-prime 5yr interest-only mortgage for $400K, with a household income maybe $45K. He tried so hard to sell us that loan, and I kept remembering his credit card issue when he graduated. He told me he financed his own new (NICE) house on a similar loan. Just so happens a $400K loan for newlyweds just 2 years out of college produced the EXACT mortgage payment we pre-determined we'd like to have as a monthly payment. For 5 years, we could afford it. So year 5 what happens? That $800 payment jumps to $2,300. Ok, so what if we can't afford that? Just sell the house, and get another $600K subprime 5yr interest only mortgage with the equity you get from selling the house since real estate always goes up.

He had it all figured out. ;)

He's not in real estate anymore, nor the mortgage business. His company folded in the 2008 (5 years after 2003) housing crisis.

Electricity ~150-$170/mo then i gotta change the whole auto pay.
beer/going out prob $300/mo - That one I can prob do easy
food: $200/mo - that one i can do easy
gas: ~$70-100/month. That one I can do, maybe if the gas station I buy gas to get Harris Teeter points takes Amex.

All that adds up to about $1100/month.

Typically when I fly its "how fast can you get there". I don't get to choose much.

I rarely fly for fun. Flying sucks. Other than the keys or somewhere in the Caribbean, where the eff would I go? I already live where a a fair amount of folks come to vacation.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

then why did you get a delta card?!?!

It hovers around 780, and I can't get it any higher. I read around some and since I only had one CC, it said I needed at least 3 CC's.

There is something to it I guess; I'm around 804 now, but I don't see it going any higher.

weird. I've never been late on a payment, have 3 CC's, a mortgage..and thats the max it will go.
Credit scores are like fuzzy math.

Prepay cable/internet/gas bill/electric bill.

I paid Spectrum $1k and Duke Power $1k and they are happy to take the money and show a credit on your account.

There's no fee for it.

prepaying the electric bill is not a bad idea.
