12/31/1993 Atlanta, GA Peach Bowl
PEACH BOWL: CLEMSON 14, KENTUCKY 13 Washington Post

ATLANTA, DEC. 31 -- Patrick Sapp's second-chance 21-yard touchdown pass to Terry Smith and Nelson Welch's extra point with 20 seconds remaining gave No. 24 Clemson a 14-13 victory over Kentucky in the Peach Bowl tonight, making Tommy West a winner in his coaching debut with the Tigers.

Sapp's pass had been intercepted three plays earlier by Marty Moore, who fumbled on the return, with Brent LeJeune claiming it for Clemson (9-3) on the Kentucky 21.

"I was going to try to score," Moore said. "The guy just hit me from the side. I went from hero to chump. I made a great play and then I cost us the game."
After two incompletions, Sapp scrambled to the right side and found Smith alone in the end zone, giving the Tigers touchdowns on their first and last possessions of the game.

Clemson's defense twice had stopped Kentucky at the 1 and the Wildcats (6-6) also squandered good field position twice in the second half before scoring 10 fourth-quarter points. Kentucky took a 13-7 lead on a five-yard pass from Pookie Jones to Mark Chatmon and a 26-yard field goal by Nicky Nickels.

West became Clemson's coach on Nov. 29 after Ken Hatfield resigned, claiming a lack of support from the school.

Clemson's rally started with 3:50 remaining when, on the first play, Sapp passed to Emory Smith, who ran 58 yards to the Kentucky 25.
Kentucky appeared to have nailed it down when Moore started upfield with his interception. But the ball came free on the tackle.

He was a starter at corner in the NFL. He was replaced by Patrick Sapp, starter at linebacker in the NFL. Terry Smith tragically passed away, I am thinking he is cousins with Deandre Hopkins. Emory Smith, brother of Emmitt, caught a screen that was really our only decent offensive play.
Weird scenario and game for sure. Lucky to walk away with a win.

Hatfield was not fired.
He went 8-3 (after going 5-6 the prior year) and Clemson did not extend his contract by a year which was common at the time. He resigned knowing he did not have the support of the AD.

What a “never give up on the play” play by the lineman (Seegars?) and Blount causing Marty to fumble.
Forgot about the two goal line stands for our D.
RIP Terry Smith.
