My favorite band, and my favorite guitarist in the band. That said I'm not sure he is even the "best" guitarist in the band. Adrian Smith has a good style, but I don't think he's enough of a virtuoso to be considered a top level guitarist.
I think Randy Rhoads was really good, but not sure if his musical sample size is large enough to classify him as one of the best. He died so young that he didn't get a chance to do anything poorly, and really only on 4 albums, 2 of which weren't anything that special.
I'm not sure it's possible to list the best guitarists but I will try to list my 5 favorite guitarists who combine good writing skills as well as technical playing.
1. Alex Skolnick 2. Chris Oliva 3. Dave Mustaine 4. Brian May 5. John Lowery

This is a very subjective poll and is hard to fully develop

a list.
You specified a general category (... top 5 guitar players ever?) instead of specific genre of music. You obviously listed rock guitarists.
So, he is my subjective list of guitarists I enjoy:
1. Brian May 2. Andrés Segovia (classical) 3. Eric Johnson 4. Eddie Van Halen 5. Nancy Wilson (not necessarily great, but nice to look at)

Thanks to the guys who listed Roy Clark. Top 5?...maybe, maybe not, but he never gets recognized on these types of lists and that cat could play any genre', any style. I've seen clips of him playing classical music as well as clips of him on stage with the likes of Eric Clapton and Mark Knopler. And he didn't take a back seat to any of them.
People don't realize what a tremendous musician he was because he told corny jokes on Hee-Haw for twenty years, but Roy Clark was an amazing instrumentalist.

People putting Prince in the top five are funny. He was never even mentioned in the top guitarists until he died and a fake quote circulated from Eric Clapton supposedly claiming Prince was the best ever.

There's no doubt that he's a great guitar player. He makes a lot of top 100 lists and deservedly so but I think a lot of people heard that fake quote from Clapton and he suddenly catapulted up into these kinds of lists. No way IMO he's top 5 though.

I would also throw in Leo Kottke and Phil Keaggy who I have never been able to see. They are both mind-blowingly good.

I saw Phil Keaggy years ago. He’s missing part of a finger and is still ridiculous. If he played on the Rock and Roll scene, everyone would know who he is. He’s content to play within the “Christian music” scene.

Jeff Beck is my #1. Just go to youtube and search for this:
Oct 7, 2020, 12:52 PM
|
|
"jeff beck live at ronnie scott's" for his performance in 2007, when he was 63 years old. It's just mind blowing. The thing about Beck is - he never stopped evolving, experimenting and pushing the envelope. His more famous Yardbird pals, Page & Clapton, hit a plateau. Page pretty much peaked in the 1970s, and Clapton just keeps laying down the same old blues licks. Nothing wrong with that, and Clapton is still very entertaining, but it's just the same old, same old. You never know what's coming next with Beck.
As Clapton once said in an interview - "Becky can play all my stuff, but I can't play any of his."
Shredding, tapping, lightning fast riffs, standard blues, etc... it's like Beck mastered all of that early on and just got bored with it. He can do all that stuff, sure, but he needed to do more...
Anyway, for me personally it's Beck, Santana, Duane, Gilmour & SRV.
edit: I've also developed a much stronger appreciation for guys like Glen Campbell, Roy Clark, Chet Atkins. Distortion, pedals, sustain, feedback, whatever... all of those special effects cover up a lot of sloppy fretwork and mistakes. When you just plug a guitar into an amp and play it straight up, your technique has to be perfect, and every note precise and clean.

In no order, some names I have not seen much here

|
1 - David Gilmore - best melodic solos 2 - Steve Vai - flawless technique 3 - John Petrucci - if Gilmore and Vai had a baby
I could go many other names as far as innovators etc - Eddie,Jimi, Randy and so forth

So tough to choose 5! Even tough to do 10. I'd like to mention 10 (Group A-1 and Group A-2, but there's not much difference if any, and I'm still leaving too many out).
Clapton - because he was the 1st to really go from OK/pretty good to virtuoso
E. Van Halen - completely innovative; revolutionary
Stevie Ray V - compelling; precision; became 'one' with the instrument
Joe Bonamassa - hard to believe one person can play so well
Duane Allman - 1st really clean slide player; his fills were also spot on
Group A-2:
Hendrix - supernatural; I only wish he'd been, at certain times, a cleaner player - but still....beyond amazing
Prince - the guy was a genius in so many ways - as a guitarist he was often overlooked - except in concert
Mark Knopfler - rarely given credit for his incredible style and talent
Dickey Betts - virtuoso and top-drawer precision player
Mick Taylor - in his prime (during his short-lived time with the Stones) was one of the top guitarists in the world

different styles of guitar playing. There are Rock guitarist, Classic guitarist, Finger Picking etc... and it is rather difficult to compare those styles. I enjoy all the styles and can appreciate each for their unique sound and talent required.
From a difficulty playing perspective, I give the nod to the finger pickers because they tend to play both harmony and melody at the same time. That takes a certain amount of rewiring your brain and fingers in order to do it properly. Additionally, the vast majority of finger picking guitar music is pure guitar - no distortion, no special pedal effects, and no stacks of amps to drive the sound.
My Top Finger Pickers: 1. Chet Atkins 2. Jerry Reed 3. Richard Smith 4. Mark Knopfler 5. Tommy Emmanuel
