Local rant from a minor car accident scene

Just got in a crash. Very minor. Lady sideswiped my front end and mushed up my front quarter pretty bad. Responding officer asks what happened and no dispute from me or her. Then he looks at my truck and says “that looks like it’s less than a $1000 to repair so you don’t have to have me file a report” I said ok are you going to write me a $1000 check so I can take it to the body shop? He got all mad and started being a jerk about writing a simple traffic accident report.
Just really got under my skin when he suggested I just drive away with a jacked up fender and not worry about it. Im not driving a beater either it’s a 2020 model and has no dents or scratches prior to this accident. Unreal….

Super annoying about the police officer being lazy.

Less and less does LE want to protect and serve when the majority of society wishes them dead.
Yea, that wasn't right. He's not an insurance adjuster and has no basis for making that statement. My wife's car was hit in a parking lot in Mb this summer. Made a big nasty dent and someone just drove off. The officer "said" there were enough cameras, but who knows...

That sounds flat out lazy. Geeeez.
You should have told him it would take less time to write you a check than it would to write up a report.

When that happens do the following while police is on scene:
1. Tell police the insurance company will not cover you claim for damages w/ o an accident report being made. Say, " I'm sorry the insurance companies have delegated their claims work to the police. Looks like they have bought off the legislators but there's nothing you or I can do about it except vote them out. But, right now, that is not the solution to my getting my claim for damages paid. So, please do a simple accident report. l'm sure you would not want me paying for the damage to my vehicle caused by someone else.
2.If officer still refuses to do accident report, get his name, and badge number.
3. Tell officer that you need the following information from the other driver and for him to get it for you. A. Driver full name and current address.
B. Driver license information such as DL # and state of DL.
C. VEHICLE MAKE AND MODEL.
D. INSURANCE COMPANY NAME AND POLICY NUMBER IF KNOWN.
TELL OFFICER, YOU WILL BE HAPPY TO TAKE PICTURE OF THE OTHER DRIVER 'S LICENSE AND INSURANCE CARD AND VEHICLE REG. CARD IF THAT WILL SAVE TIME.
4. TAKE PIC OF DAMAGE TO YOUR VEHICLE AND DAMAGE TO OTHER PERSON'S VEHICLE. TRY TO GET POLICE OFFICER IN PICTURE IF POSSIBLE.
File your claim and provide ins.co with info you have if no accident report is made.
On minor traffic accidents, esp. On pvt. Property, police do or do not make accident reports. In those jurisdictions where reports are not made, many police departments fill out an exchange of information form for each driver with the info I posted.
Insurance companies have screwed us by delegating their work on minor fender benders to the police. With the high cost of everything now , the minimum damage you will incurr is now $1000.
Be very careful in pkg. Lots. If you have an accident there, you are likely to not get an accident report by police who probably won't even respond unless there is an injury. And your insurance company will pay your claim but charge you the deductible and raise your rate.

There is also a form on the DMV that can be printed out and completed (FR-310). Police will sometimes suggest that you can exchange information and report it to insurance. Keeps the collision from being reported on the carfax for the vehicle, especially minor damage. Also keeps you from waiting forever for someone to get there and take the report.
However, you are right about the report. It doesn’t take long to fill out.

It doesn’t take much at all to get over $1000 these days. I drove my wife’s car to a Clemson game a few years ago and a guy bumped into the back bumper. Looked at the damage and not much to the naked eye. Got his info and insurance and told him I would get it checked out. $1600 to repair, I couldn’t believe it. I went and got another estimate and It was $1800. It’s crazy how the whole back bumper had to be replaced for a low speed bump.

A minor fender bender hits $3000 easily. Dude pulled into me as he was pulling out of a parking spot in Greenville 18 months ago. New fender and door required plus painting.
Body shops don’t really beat stuff out anymore. It’s new bolt on parts and paint.

Not seeing your vehicle but going by your description, I’ll guess it’s $2500 or more. Body work is expensive.

A few years ago while parked overnight at a motel on Heywood Rd, came out to see a scratch on the passenger door. It was about an inch long, no more than 1/16 wide and down past the clear coat and paint. Only blemish on the car. Was quoted $1200 to fix. Don't think another car door did that.

You cannot get a scratch fixed for less than a thousand.

That cop hasn't been to a body shop in the last ten years.

There ain't no such THING as a $1000 accident anymore. Try $5,000 and UP, even for what you consider a minor fender bender.

A dumb coot backed into my car in a parking lot...

...and damaged with rear quarter panel and truck lid. The body shops are so backed up, they are doing shotty work. After waiting two months just to start the work, it took three weeks. I then had to take it back FIVE times to get it right. It took nearly a year, a lot of my time, and now the car is worth less just because of that check box on CarFax. I did get some diminished value compensation, but not enough. The total cost to his insurance company was over $13,000.

Guarantee you it costs more than you $1000 to fix. I retired from L.E. about 1/3 are traffic Nazis. About a third are lazy. About 1/3 are just hard working common sense.
