Who here is a master of Linguistics?
On a football post some are posting in ??

In my tiny high school we had French and Latin Club that met after school. I had a job so could not attend.
At Clemson did a couple semesters in Spanish. I can order a Taco.

For a couple years lived in a small German Village in a one room apartment. I bought and played LPs teaching me Deutsche. Too boring!
Too be honest, learned more hanging out in the lone local Tanz (dance) bar.
I could converse well enough to shop, order a beer, talk to girls, watch TV. Actually, for me reading is much easier.

Back in the states married an Austrian girl fresh off the boat. I am now proficient at all the words in German Tnet will not let us post. She is feisty and now lives in another state. Wonderful girl who I sometimes have to censor on my FB page.

Can I speak a language other than English? --> Nope.
I can do Oxford and RedNeck OK.

What can yawl speak?

One night a drunken party was going on in my place.
As I passed by the kitchen, two girls tried to get my attention.
I responded "Ich spreche kein Deutsch". I used that expression a lot.

Later I learned they were ENGLISH. I could understand the German girls better than these girls with their heavy British accent.

I have that problem with the Scots as well. Can't understand a word they say. The Irish all seem to sounds like little 6 year old elves.

Hundreds of years ago my Maternal kin arrived from Cork.
About the same time my Paternal kin arrived from Scotland.

My kin have fought for and built America.

I speak "Southern".

Noam Chomsky is considered the grandfather. Dark forces are manipulating society and its words to bend it to its will. Most are unaware they are caught in a trap that is isolating them from their own good morality, and some caught in a perpetual state of cognitive dissonance, questioning what they believe is real to justify the malevolent actions being taken against us.

“People have to be atomized and segregated and alone. They're not supposed to organize, because then they might be something beyond spectators of action. They might actually be participants if many people with limited resources could get together to enter the political arena. That's really threatening.”

I’ve learned the older I get the less I know. I can’t even speak English, man! I can butcher the queens English pretty well.

I can understand basic Spanish and French. I can have conversations with toddlers! I know just enough to watch TV in those languages. Barely.

Master? No sir. I doubt I’m master of my own mind! 🤣

My youngest Grandson is about to finish 8th grade. He is really smart and is going to the State finals for the Science Olympics at N.C. State as he lives in N.C. This is his 3rd time going. Anyway his school posted interviews with the students and he said he wanted to be a Linguist. The kid has read 1000s of books since he was little. He studies the bible, has taught himself Mandarin.
It still surprised me that he chose that as an 8th grader.

I took French for 4 years in high school. Time completely wasted. Never spoke a word of it after school but it was the only foreign language offered at our small school so we had no choice. When I lived in South Florida I started to take night classes to learn Spanish. We moved a few months after I got started so I didn’t get very far with it either. It did make me wonder how long it would take to become fluent in a foreign language taking an hour and a half class once per week.

We went to Germany last year. I learned one word. “Ausfahrt.” Through deductive reasoning and context we decided it had to mean “exit”. I found it entertaining enough that we bought a small sign they were selling at a souvenir store (right next to the local beer) and put it over the door leaving our bonus room/ man cave.
