I asked for some ammunition to disprove my wife's theory that flying to Hilton Head from Nashville was unequivocally one of the dumbest logistical decisions one could make?
On top of having the infinite wisdom of the Jounge brain trust on my side...One would think that, ya know, having the #1 industrial engineering degree on the planet and designing billion dollar supply chain networks in my ####### sleep would elevate me to a position of superior intellectual capabilities from a trip planning / logistics perspective, right? Nah. #### me.

Yeah, so, $3,285 later, I have 3 plane tickets and a car rental IN SAVANNAH ####### GEORGIA b/c my wife was "dreading driving".

I'm so pissed off I can't even ####### see straight right now.
Reasons: - We're flying southwest airlines. I hate southwest airlines. - We land and STILL have to drive an hour, at least. - We have to buy luggage to trudge through the airport. - All in, we're maybe...MAYBE...saving 2-2.5 hours each way. Quick math puts the justification at this of a MINIMUM of $600/hr, not counting additional luggage, rental stuff, etc. that is still TBD. - I'm flying southwest airlines. - I'll be stuck somewhere with a dependency on the most unreliable airline over the last five or six quarters. - I cannot bring my pot to a vacation house full of women aged 86 years to 4 months. - I have to ship my golf clubs
new question: how do you guys stay married for so long?

My mother's parents had a great relationship. Back in the 1950s they used an old style fridge with a handle which you twisted to release the door. The day the handle started getting loose my grandmother said, "Charles, we need a new refrigerator."
Granddaddy when on a cussing binge which led me to believe he had not intentions of spending money like that. My grandmother remained expressionless and silent. Two days later a Sears delivery truck showed up with the latest model fridge.
I remember first going to SS at Arial Baptist in Easley. It was suggested that I, being 39, go ahead and attend the 40+ class. I was the baby there for the next oldest guy to me was nearly 60. Sometime toward the end of the class one of the guys said 'It's about time to eat.'
In the next two minutes the men had decided when to eat and exactly what they wanted served. It turned out they were talking about some Saturday gathering of their families which included everyone at Arial Baptist.
Being stunned that they made all those decisions for the church in a matter of minutes I said, "So that's how it is on the other side of 40, huh?" They all laughed and agreed, 'Yep, that's how it is on this side. Now who's going to tell the women?'
One of them left to visit the girl's group and returned in less than five minutes. He said, 'They say Saturday next won't work and they aren't doing the cooking.' I said, 'I'm glad to know you gentlemen are guided by the rule of thumb.'

I do not own luggage for a family of four, including two children under two years of age... to travel for a week via airline to and from, no.
We had a few duffel bags adn various totes, etc. that we'd throw into the car like everyone else.

it's a crapshoot, but with two kids too young to self regulate their inner ear pressure, it's going to be heck. I was on a flight to NY once and I had a head cold that kept me from popping my ears. By the time we landed, I had a headache that would kill an elephant. I would take something they can chew on to try and get their ears to pop.

so our 4 month old is on hypoallergenic formula, that's pre-made. Ready to feed.
Told my wife, good luck getting that through airport security. Should be a hoot to be with a 5 month old baby for 5.5 hours with no food.
She was like, well how do all these people travel with babies?
Told her, I dunno, ask your brain trust that convinced you this was the way.

Just about ANY FL west coast or panhandle beach is FAR SUPERIOR to HHI or any SC beach.
Unless you like murky gray water and brown sand.
I'm a blue clear water and white sand guy myself.
Those that think SC beaches are better have never been to the aforementioned places in FL.

If I made my SC beach drive 250% longer and ended up in Destin I’d probably be angry too. The difference isn’t there in that case. In our case (dawg and me) it’s two hours or more shorter to Gulf Coast, and I’m talking about beaches on the periphery of Destin that are clearly superior, so it’s absolutely worth it.

off the color of the water is pretty soft.
Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I don't like soft sand. Hate it, actually. And the gulf coast is all soft sand.
Clearly you aren't in tune with the latest design trends from sherman williams, b/c the latest rage is the all the greige color. In fact, my walls are painted Sea Pines Sand Grey in my estate.
Color / Clarity of the water? Sounds like you grew up in the upstate and are just scared of salt water. Where I grew up, the water was ####### brown. HHI is very clear compared to that. Never bothered me one bit, and in fact, leads to superior crustacean growth and taste at scale. The ecosystem is far superior and the fishing supports that, IMO.
The only fishing I'd go to that stretch of beach over the Atlantic SE Coast bend, would be snapper. The snapper season there is legit, bottom fishing reigns supreme - even though I've caught my fair share of bottom fish in coastal SC And GA waters.
If you're wanting to go catch the big game fish, you have to go to Venice, or go down to south FL.
I've been to aforementioned places to FL, and I won't be going back voluntarily. Cape San Blas was probably my favorite, ironically, and I didn't really spend that much time on the beach. But that's on the very eastern edge of the "30A" area. Give me IOP, HHI, Fripp, Pawley's, St. Simons, Jekyll, Amelia...all day long and twice on Sunday.
In that stretch, there's 2 regular PGA Tour stops, PGA Championship stops, Walker Cup tourneys, etc. etc.
One thing I noticed when in 30A...Santa Rosa / Rosemary is where we stayed....there's no boating culture. You have all these beach towns with no marinas / access to the oceans. There's no solid rivers to go play in. I think that's the biggest differentiator, IMO, and explains why everything feels like a starbucks in flip flops.

B) you need to try Fort Morgan next time. Much greater boating presence.
Gulf Shores is a tru beach town. Not bougie but nice. I say imagine Myrtle without the white trash, bikers, tat parlors and vape shops. Kind of a throwback beach town. Reminds me of what Pawleys and Litchfield were like in the 80’s and 90’s.

Hate I missed the original question for ammunition.
Correct answer would be to let her fly down and you drive. You save all the airfare - bring what you want - no car rental - 8 glorious hours of just you, the highway and your favorite music as you make your way...
Heck you could even fake car trouble on the way back and extend your vacation another day or two.

In sea pines since late 80s. My grandma bought it when my aunt and my mom were pregnant with me and my cousin. We sold that a few years ago when we put her in a home. Been going there my whole life.
I don't disagree with the negativities of what HHI has become, but now my mom and my aunt are about to buy a spot there so I don't see it changing as our familial meeting spot. It's not my favorite, but I prefer it way more than the gulf coast.
We were in Santa Rosa. Destin feels like Myrtle Beach to me.
In this same time period, my grandpa had a spot in wild dunes.
I'd rather go to practically anywhere on the Atlantic except for Tybee over the best the gulf coast has to offer.

The food was ok, but WAY over-priced and this was before massive inflation hit. I would say +35% to comparable HHI restaurants and that place ain't cheap.
And the beach we went to there was not good. Not sure where it was exactly, but we stayed at the Palms Resort and it was across the street from there somewhere. Beach was very narrow, very steep drop off right as you went in the water, and no waves. The water was clear, which was cool, but that was the only good feature. Not even in the same range as most beaches in SC.

Destin has 1 way to get from place to place and it's redneck dragstrip 24/7.
When we go to HHI and stay in Shipyard, for example, I never feel like I have to battle traffic until leaving the island. But yeah...coming on and off the island can be bad at certain times.

Let’s be clear. I’m not talking about Destin-Destin.

If you went to Destin and actually stayed in Destin, you did it wrong.
Little further down 30A to Rosemary and you would have had a completely different vacation.
In the other direction, Gulf Shores and Fort Morgan, AL are great beach towns.
Spent the 80’s at Edisto, IOP and HHI (before the Yankees took over and ruined it) and my parents have had a place at Litchfield since the early 90’s. Love Litchfield and Pawleys but I’d take any place I just mentioned over them all day long.

she will do lots of shopping because you are on vacation. The fact that you have less disposable income because you are on vacation means nothing.
I gave up saving on travel early on. If I can get a $500 ticket that leaves at 6 am or a $800 ticket that leaves at 10, I'm taking the $800 ticket every time.
Also never fly after 6. Planes are last and canceled too much in the evening. Whatever it cost to be more convenient is the cost you choose.

$3285 for 3 SW tix and a rental vehicle for a week??
Did you or the wife pay for this?
Seems terribly excessive for that?
If you’ve got travelers insurance I would bail with a medical ailment of your choice.
My ### would be so chapped people could mistake me for a baboon with leprosy.
I feel your pain.
Agree that HHI is fine if you’re N of the Mason Dixon line. Florida Gulf Coast>>>> HHI

Would do it again. Unless I have to be somewhere immediately, I’ll never step foot on a plane again.

Every time I went through BNA, either I was delayed/cancelled OR I would be so drunk from the fake Tootsies or Yazoo brewing spots that I would miss my flight.

Is Southwest really that bad? I've never flown with them.

I flew Frontier once or twice to Denver. Nothing fancy, just air transportation held together with duct tape and expensive luggage fees. It wasn't THAT bad.

With Delta you’re going to be slumming it on Southwest, but for routine family travel, Southwest does a nice job.
Due to logistics this year, we had to fly Frontier to get out to Denver. Never again man, never again. I was expecting loose chickens and roosters to be running up and down the aisle, and our 2pm flight home finally took off at 1am.

I take pride in trying to be a pretty laid back, not snotty type of dude. But two things I'm pretty #### about are airlines and hotels.
Prolly b/c I'm almost to million miler status in Delta.
Nothing tweaks me more than a bunch of tourists in an airport, and anytime I'm on a terminal where SW flights are, it's just like being at a greyhound bus station. Is it that bad? No, I'm just being dramatic from 9 years of consulting.
