But perhaps we’ve figured it out. A pay cut may be what the school needs.

I may still be young (nearly 30) but I still believe in a degree or at least some years in college meaning something. Granted the age gap between me and this new generation of college athletes is very apparent anytime I talk to them, they do have a lazier, more self-centered mindset most of the time. Some still have a good head on their shoulders but the other ones are definitely starting to outweigh them.

The people Nick is talking about aren't concerned about a degree.

They are going to Bama to get to the NFL. Their parents know that. They are looking for a job, not a degree. And, they are interviewing at several companies. The one that pays them the most money is the company they will choose.
And, the NCAA is fine with that. The NCAA embraces that model. Degrees are available for the few folks who want them, but they aren't a major part of the sales pitch.

So you are saying most of these kids are really bad at math / probabilities.
A few of the players want a degree.
But statistics confirmed that a few of the players make it to the NFL.
The OP is correct, most of these players make horrible career choices.
However, most of this is self-inflicted, they have an opportunity to get a degree, they choose not to do so. Welcome to America. Eat what you kill.

Then dont ask me to pay for a scholarship then if your goal is not to graduate but to get to the nfl…. Why i am paying for something they dont want?
Would be better just to give them the money we would spend on scholarship and they can decide if they want to invest in a degree or not.

Im sure most players value their college education, especially at Clemson, so you're still good. 95% of college players don't make it to the NFL, so if they want to make a little extra scratch while they are in college, then I dont mind. Remember, not every player is making hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Serious question, if he is/was so disgusted with it all, then why stay around and be a promoter/on air personality on ESPN? To me the easy answer is money...

Good question. Seems like he is now fueling the fire and promoting a sport that is no longer about the STUDENT-athlete.

Nope - the answer is more likely that he didn't feel appreciated for what he was contributing in his job. That can be a prime motivator for a resignation from any principled person.

I agree with Nick, but have one observation to make.

When people see problems they tend to figure out solutions that exclude them from being part of the casue of the problem. They tend to point fingers at others.
Nick has been in coaching for 50 years. He, rightfully so, became the most influential coach in the game. He has lived through the NCAA making "student" less and less important and making the goal of his program "develop players for the NFL." He has watched the NCAA ipso facto become "AAA pro football." He has watched his university develop more and more exotic facilities. It didn't seem to bother him that Bama could recruit by showing the kids they had the best dorms and player lounges and amenities in the country.
Did he ever say, "What can we do find a balance between football and student?"
Note, I'm not blaming Nick for the fiasco he described in the video. I'm just saying he should be willing to look in a mirror and say, "I could have done a better job in preventing this mess."

It became a dinner topic is why the parents and kids discuss it openly now and Saban quit because he realized he had no hole card to play to seal those 5* deals.
