How is Tre Lamar not on a NFL roster right now?

The dude was a finalist for the Butkus award meaning he was recognized as one of the top 3 linebackers in all of college football. He then went undrafted and was cut by the Lions after a very brief stint on their roster.
What's deal? He was great at Clemson and I always thought he had an ideal body for a NFL linebacker. Is he too slow or something?

Always thought he was slow and inflexible. Good run stopper though.

Still unsure of why he didn't come back for one more year. Would have been a monster in the middle for this defense.

Hard to think his stock could go much higher than coming off a season where he went 15-0 and was a Butkus finalist. But then again he went undrafted, so obviously in hindsight it would have been a good move.

I could see that being the case. Why not come back for one more championship run and start your masters? Even it was unlikely to boost his stock a lot, he almost certainly wouldn't have lowered it.

how a guy can forfeit the potential to increase his stock value when that stock value was zero. Seems incredibly, unimaginably stupid, especially for a player who had made notable progress through his junior year. This guy was making plays on the #1 team... he wasn’t “under the radar”. How the #u€£ do you NOT know that you are undraftable?

Why doesn't the NCAA let guys that go undrafted change their minds and come back to college if they have eligibility left ?/

Unfortunately his 40 time was 4.95 at best. That's worse than Boulware's from 2017. Here's a quote: "Lamar was timed at 4.95 and 4.97, which would have placed him 22nd among the 23 linebackers tested at the Combine this year.
The sluggish time – even for a monster-sized linebacker (6-4, 253) – could push Lamar deep into Day Three or out of the draft entirely as teams will be forced to question where he fits in today’s pass-happy NFL."

I bet he would've been great in the league if it were back when LBs looked more like him, but leagues are going for more Simmons-like dudes.

Thanks for the insight. Maybe he should try and switch to DE or fullback or something...

Maybe it’s his coverage skills.

Valuable player for us, but not an NFL talent. So why leave early? Seems unthinkably dumb.

Easy for you to say in hindsight. He was a five star talent who was a Butkus finalist and probably had multiple people telling him he would be drafted. Also I'm pretty sure he graduated. Try putting yourself in his shoes before you act like this was an easy no-brainer decision. At the time, it wasn't. I remember assuming that he would be drafted in the first 3 or 4 rounds and was shocked that he wasn't.

Would've been a prototypical run stuffing MLB

20 years ago. Nowadays you can't get on the field if you can't run and cover backs and TEs.

Great Tiger, but as others have stated, it's not the old run stuffing MLB type as much anymore. Simmons and even Muse are closer to what teams are starting to look at the last few years. IMO if we didnt have Simmons, Muse would be in that spot and likely be balling out there as well.

Lateral (Sideline to Sideline) Speed....

I always told my family and friends that he shouldn't have declared early. He is quite the physical specimen, no doubt, and once he's within 2 feet of you with a full head of steam he's going to deliver the wood...but his lateral quickness sucks @$$. Not quick enough and not enough agility for the pros. Dont blast me guys, it's only my person opinion. Go Tigers!

WasTre Lamar a liabilty against SCAR last year?

Did that contribute to their massive passing yards? I think our pass defense has improved significantly since last year.

I don't believe he played in that game.
Pretty sure I remember he was out with an injury.
I think injuries played a part in him trying to go ahead and make the jump along with other factors I'm sure.

Same issue as Boulware as others have stated. He's a throwback 2-down LB who would've been great in the 1990s. Not today though.

If there's a weak link in pass coverage on first and second down. Teams just aren't going to hand the ball off anymore. They're going to attack and expose that weakness.
