For dinner cooking
There's some validity to your post, but unless you're that old, it's hard to understand 1) the angst of that generation and how Nirvana captured it perfectly 2) the absolute crap for heavier music the industry was shoving down our throat. Poison and Cinderella tipped the scales way too far in one direction and Nirvanna was the perfect counter balance.

I was hitting my prime in the grunge era, but I was too young for the 80's

bullshidd that was coming out.
I guess more simplistically, Cobain contracting lead poisoning did more for the band's legacy.
Of note, one day my daughter told me that her friend thought Nirvana was a clothing brand. Daughter wasn't sure so she asked me.

To MSYNAN's point, Nirvana came along at the right time and churned out some

really good stuff in a short span. To your point Greenr...I don't think the band would have had any staying power for a decades-long career and may very well have become more of a footnote in rock history than the legend they became due to the how and when of Cobain's demise. We'll never know, but I kinda think that's how it would have shaken out. I sort of see Cobain doing summer oldies package shows at LiveNation amphitheaters were he alive today.

Now that I think it through, they're kind of The Doors 25 years later.

Not much bigger when it was happening, but who really, intentionally listens to Nirvana now? It's pretty simple 3 chord punk with a little added flair from Grohl and Kurt's voice, but it's still basic as a catalog. There's some standouts in there too, though. Come As You Are, Breed, and Lithium are back to back to back bangers. Something In The Way could easily be an AIC song. Waif Me (Wal Mart version of Rape Me) is a pretty funny reminder of the times. All Apologies is well put together. Their covers of Meat Puppets don't suck, nor does Bowie's The Man Who Sold The World.
But I don't ever go "man, you know what sounds good? Some NIRVANA!"

I had gotten my dad a new necktie for his birthday. I guess it had to be 1991.
I had just bought the Pearl Jam debut CD - which if you all old farts remember - CDs came in a long, thin, cardboard "longbox" back then (stock photo attached below), I suppose to deter shoplifters in the stores. Longbox was the perfect package to wrap a necktie in, so that's what I did.
When dad unwrapped the gift, he stared at the Peal Jam artwork and said "what in the heck is a Pearl Jam?". That quote was a LOL with me and my brother forever.

I think the use of homophone in angst-laden lyrics is the quintessence
