Politics and sports. A tennis controversy

Jan 23, 2018, 1:16 PM

If you haven't heard there has been a great cinderella run story at the Australian Open this tear. Tennys Sandgren from Tennessee who played tennis at Tennessee in college has made an out of nowhere run to the quarterfinals. The first unseeded American male to make a slam quarterfinals since 1991. Ranked 97 in the world he was never expected to make this run and defeat 2 top10 players on the way.

He has also overcome several injuries in his career, is well spoken and a very hard worker. In all facets should be a great underdog story that American embraces. (I mean hell his name is TENNYS, what a story!)

But there's 1 issue. His twitter political tweets and likes of the past. Liking "alt-right" tweets, tweeting "homophobic" things etc.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/early-lead/wp/2018/01/22/meet-americas-new-tennis-sensation-tennys-sandgren-he-should-never-have-tweeted/?utm_term=.176be7c54c20

Many in tennis media have been raking him over the coals. And refusing to allow him to have this great moment if his career and will not let people forget his twitter action. He has since basically deleted all of his twitter content.

To what extent should an athletes politics affect how they are viewed on the athletic playing field? I feel like this story is a great example to all athletes that what you do on social media is not forgotten and matters. His decision to make his strong political opinions known has cost him a shot at being a truly good American sports story.

many would still label me as alt-right. Not seeing his tweets, I can't make a definitive judgement, but I do know that expressing opinions have consequences.

Nobody should be berated, but expressing opinions certainly can affect your standing. IMO, Jane Fonda should have spent time in prison,..I certainly won't listen to anything she says and won't watch anything she does.

SO I guess he has it coming, though I am sure it will be more vociferous than any alt-left opinions would receive.

That’s on you if you want to believe lies...

Jan 23, 2018, 2:58 PM

There is no such thing as the alt left, nobody on the left call themselves that. There is no new movement on the left to have a name. Alt right is a term modern day white supremacists coined for themselves. So it’s not a term created by the media or a pundit. It’s created by the very people belonging to that group. Just because the term got exposed for the vile and disgusting behavior of these people doesn’t mean there is an equal just because one group exists. The alt term only refers to modern day white supremacists. There are no other Alt movements of any kind outside of the alt right.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If you want to believe that one must claim to be something

Jan 23, 2018, 3:03 PM

for it to actually be true, then by all means go for it. It doesn't mean that there isn't a group(s) like that just because they do not call themselves that specific name.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

wrong again..

Jan 23, 2018, 4:43 PM

There is no such thing as the alt left. There is no new movement on the left to even coin a term for. Just because your side got embarrassed by being in cahoots with white supremacists, doesn’t mean an alt left all of sudden came into existence. I know the fascist tactic of repeating something that’s not true over and over as if it is true. That ain’t gonna work here, repeat it all you want and still there is no such thing as as the alt left.

Like I said nobody on the left calls themselves the alt left, and there is no new movement on the left to coin a term for. Keep on living in your fantasy world, but you don’t have a single fact to back up your assertion no matter how many times you repeat the term over and over.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You shouldn't assume queenie.

Jan 23, 2018, 4:57 PM

First off, I mentioned nothing of "my side," so therefore your argument of "my side" being in "cahoots" with anyone is nothing short of misguided and false from the start.

Secondly, you state "there is no new movement on the left to even coin a term for." Does that mean you believe that the white supremacist/nationalist movement is new? Have you had your head in the sand your whole life, or just up your ###?

Anyways...

Like I said, just because someone doesn't call themselves a name doesn't mean they aren't what they are. If a serial killer doesn't "identify" as a serial killer does that mean they aren't one? No, it doesn't.

I also don't see how you can claim that there are no "alt-leftist groups" when you have members of Antifa attacking virtually any conservatives, not just the crazy alt-right ones. By their very essence they are alt-leftists, sorry to break it to you.

I know the anti-fascist tactic of repeating something that's not true over and over as if it is true.

I said modern day white supremacists, hence modern. And it's a term they coined for themselves, as I have pointed out. Funny you bring up antifa. As it's not part of the mainstream left, isn't organized, isn't a new group, is a extremely loose knit group, they aren't attacking right wingers, it's made up of extremely small groups, and unlike white supremacist they aren't an ethnic supremacist group. You don't even understand what antifa is, and the differences between antifa groups throughout different countries and throughout history. Sorry a false equivalency, and retyping what I typed at gonna work. Sorry to break it to you there is no such thing as the alt left. No group on the left claims that term, and there is no new movement or new version of a movement on the left to coin a term for. Your side owns the term alt right, exaggerating another group's size or actions, along with false equivalency is going to change that. Own up to the term, and quit projecting yourself onto people who disagree with you.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Really, it wasn't a middle school "homophobic" slur as I

Jan 24, 2018, 10:56 AM

said nothing of your sexuality (although it doesn't really matter to me). If you like men or women that's great and I hope you find happiness with a partner in life, it won't affect me at all.

Good job on projecting though!

Perhaps you should learn something, even though you call them "modern day" white supremacists doesn't change the fact that those maniacs have been around longer than just "modern day." Just because YOU add the "modern day" in front of white supremacists doesn't mean it is a "new movement." You are directly going against your own declarations made to me when you do that, which discredits what you are saying. But, "your side" is used to doing that, right?

As for Antifa, I'm assuming you're defending their tactics and actions which puzzles me. However, that does explain why you are adamantly stating that there is "no alt-left" because "no one calls themselves alt-left." My apologies, you're correct, They call themselves Antifa.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2017/08/28/black-clad-antifa-attack-right-wing-demonstrators-in-berkeley/?utm_term=.6acabf744255

http://www.cnn.com/2017/08/18/us/unmasking-antifa-anti-fascists-hard-left/index.html

The second link is from "your side's" website, and I must apologize; you don't go by "alt-left," instead it seems you identify with "hard-left" or "far-left." (That's not me saying it, CNN did)

I thought you said they "weren't attacking right wingers?" I just provided direct evidence against your claim.

Also, you say "Antifa isn't a part of the main stream left," so since the "alt-right" is not a part of the main stream right that means there is no "alt-right?" What point were you trying to make there? You do realize that by "calling themselves alt-right" that by definition that means they aren't "mainstream right," please tell me that makes sense to you.

Finally, you tell me to "own up to the term alt-right?" What in the hell are you talking about? Are you saying I'm a racist, white nationalist? If so, that's a pretty bold claim and I would ask that you remove it as it is 100% incorrect, unsubstantiated, and quite frankly derogatory. But, what else would we expect from you, the race baiter.

I also love the line "quit projecting yourself onto people that disagree with you." That is pure gold, coming from you.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Jan 24, 2018, 9:25 AM [ in reply to there is no such thing as the alt left*** ]

There is such a thing as the Alt-Left, not as powerful as the Alt-Right(because the left is more splintered than the right), but they do exist, and they are even MORE guilty of electing a reality star, con man President than the right. They were spouting the same alternative facts(lies) on their media outlets as the right without checking, or maybe, they checked and knew they were lies, but shared them anyway for own their agenda. They possibly thought that electing the worst possible President would bring about the change that they wanted next time. They convinced gullible fools to vote for Jill Stein, write-in Bernie, or simply stay home and get someone who shared NONE of their beliefs instead of Hillary who shared many of them. They are now upset because they got what they deserved and want to march. As a moderate, I have less use for them than Trump supporters.

Jan 24, 2018, 1:38 PM

I am not some right-winger who repeats alternative facts that they got from Breibart, Matt Drudge,, or Infowars and calls everyone not far-right a leftist or a Liberal. I am a moderate who watched his country flushed down the drain by my a conspiracy of my left-wing friends(quoting many of the same "alternative facts" that my right-wing were posting) from those sites on my FB page. I thought it would a cold day in h-ll before I saw some of those people post from Breibart, something that they would have scorned anyone who did that a year earlier, as a gullible right-winger that would believe anything. These people cost us a shyster of monumental proportions as our current(who the heck mentioned Obama besides you? Or are you a right-wing fake posing as a Liberal to reinforce every stereotype to make these right-wingers feel better) occupant of the White House. I hope the country can survive four years of these fools hissy-fit over Bernie. They couldn't get the Scotch they wanted so they decided to drink bleach instead. As I said before, I have more respect for Trump voters who voted their beliefs(although I think they were mistaken) than these clowns who voted against their own interests and (supposed) beliefs.

Like Isner and Ryan Harrison and they got some hate ultimately not a lot because it was a political opinion.

However Sandgren's views do seem to be more extreme than just supporting Trump and that's why tennis media has been tearing him up
