I have not lived in Japan but traveled there a couple of times for work. Would take some getting used to but overall, a really nice place.

People don't speak much English.
The exchange rate to US $ is pretty good right now.
People are generally helpful and friendly and it's low crime.
Definitely a cool place to spend a few months working.
I wouldn't want to live there long term.
Your quality of life highly depends on where you are living and whether you have someone with you that is native Japanese.
Outside of major cities, many areas shut down at 7 PM and bedroom cities 45 minutes outside of major cities don't have much to do.
Public transportation is good but it can take you an hour to get to a place that's a 15 minute drive away if you don't plan where you live carefully.

Be prepared. I'm sure you know what's going on now.
My friend and his family lived in Japan for several years. They had to get used to tremors and earthquakes.

with Japanese husband and she loves the country and has started up a tour guide business showing Americans around her city..and teaches English to locals.
