I think we should have left a presence there.
I've got no way to prove it, but I strongly suspect that President Obama didn't push very hard to have a Maliki agree to leave a base there and likely wanted that decision as cover.

there?
Japan? Germany?
Point is, a war can "end" and troops can still remain.
Regardless of how one feels about the Iraq war, it seems to me than no one wants to see Islamic militants/ISIS take control of the country.
The only thing worse than spending all of the blood and treasure there is to have it all be for not.

I have asked several Muslim friends this question.

[ in reply to Lets just divide up Iraq into three states where the ] |
|
They all think it is a bad idea. I say, "But you have proved for centuries that you cannot live with each other, why not separate into culturally compatible regions/countries?"
They all reply very similarly, that there would be even more strife if they were able to have a home base where they could return to safe haven after aggressive excursions across their border.
It's like 3 year olds in the back seat, they will only behave when confronted by a more powerful authority. Left to their own devices, someone always gets hurt.

It was stupid to try and establish a democracy there
Jun 12, 2014, 11:50 AM
|
|
It will never happen. In Afghanistan we had a guy to put in to power once we kicked out the Taliban. That worked better. But in Iraq, we somehow decided to wing it and expect people who don't have a culture compatible with democracy to suddenly embrace it? We have lost all perspective regarding the role Christianity plays in our nation, its founding, and its functioning. A famous political scientist once told me to never underestimate the role of Christianity in shaping America. Likewise, never underestimate the role of Islam in preventing democracy and/or establishing dictatorships, monarchies, or theocracies. Spend an hour in a fundamentalist Muslim nation and you will appreciate the role Christianity plays in America and also appreciate the role Islam plays in Muslim nations.
It is related.....

Is there a link to prove that the WMD's aren't actually being stored in a magical castle hovering about Tikrit?
Does that mean we should believe that the WMDs are there, too?

Saying the story isn't true doesn't make it not true. The fact is, Saddam used wmd on his own people and we didn't find those either. I guess since we didn't find it, he never had them and the history we all know is a great big lie. AND, the nazis didn't kill millions of Jews either.
Bad logic.
