Joe Manchin almost ground the Covid relief package to a halt

Mar 6, 2021, 10:02 PM

only to give less help to the unemployed who need it the most.

What principle was he trying to promote ??

What if Manchin proves to be - not a voice for moderation - but merely a mediocre Senator with a lack of vision and understanding.

Joe may also be just trying to survive as a Dem in West Virginia. That's real tough right now.

He actually has a lot of leverage as the swing vote, and you can tell he's going to use it to the max...and especially be seen using it to the max. My best guess is he's going to find a way to demonstrate all the ways he's turning this political capital into tangible stuff he's getting for West Virginia. Keep in mind I think he does stand again in 2022 so political theatre and optics are going to be real important to him right now. The Dems are just going to have to be prepared for him to be the Difficult Democrat.

Quo

You are right about his leverage - but he did NOT get anything for his West Virginians in this huge bill. In fact, he probably hurt a bunch of them.

Oh, I can promise you he collected markers like Monopoly money. How they roll, in Washington.

Covid bill as a symbol of moderation? lol. You know how foolish that sounds? It’s a polar opposite.

Keowee,

You mean that the Reps didn't want to provide needed help to working- class Americans ??

They did. Republicans opened up their states 100%. Now that’s a stimulus. In fact, the stimulus is only needed to combat ridiculous shutdowns. How fkn ret’d is that?

Manchin talks a good game but has no backbone when chuckie and nanny put the pressure on him. He'll cave on firearms too when the libbies come after them.

Give less to the unemployed?

Mar 7, 2021, 7:45 AM

Do you follow CNN headlines?

He argued that the UE benefits were too rich. The bill had an EXTRA $400/week on top of state benefits. UE is down to 6.2 percent. It was that high, or higher for about 6 years under the Obama Presidency. Was that UE rate too high then? I can tell you from personal experience when the UE was raised $600 in the original stimulus, it kept people from looking for work. Especially in the construction industry. Why work when you can sit about and do nothing and get $1,000/week?

His compromise was $300 extra per week.

The bill also diverts money to states based on number of unemployed, not population. So blue states that are closed get their hand out.

He was a voice of moderation, IMHO.

If you have had a job this whole time

Mar 7, 2021, 8:01 AM

you should not get a check. Period.

This should only be an extension of unemployment.

It’s absolutely asinine to think that you should just get a check cause people have gotten sick. It’s completely ludicrous

The key word is "stimulus" - give everybody money they can

Mar 7, 2021, 12:52 PM

go spend to keep the economy going. (Not because they need the money - but because the economy needs it.)

I completely disagree with it, by the way. The economy will do fine when everything opens back up. The Dems are just buying votes at this point.

I laugh when Biden says most Americans are in favor of it. The average idiot American only knows they are about to be given money - so of course they are going to be in favor of it.

I belong to the group of idiots who believe that politicians

should do what's best for their country, instead of doing what's best for their party.

Mar 7, 2021, 3:14 PM [ in reply to The key word is "stimulus" - give everybody money they can ]

many categories isn’t enough? Even brick and mortar is lifting 60-70% comps right now. I see the sales and the data. Construction through the roof. Real Estate is completely insane. This is not needed at all.
