I've always thought that area had nice golf course potential

driven through there a million times on the "shortcut" route from Clemson to Columbia.
Being raised in the golf course arena and having a brother who has built a couple courses in his career, random land tracts out in the country jump out to me that have that natural golf course features. That area always "had it" to me with the flowing terrain, mature trees, and plentiful water sources. Should be nice.

now, making Hole 1 a 620 yard Par 5 is just sinister

they should dial that back some. My golf course architect mind tells me that the first hole should be a relatively simple, short par 4 without too many obstacles. Just to get the golfer relaxed and calm for starters.
You don't start the obstacle course with the hardest feat to do.
Basic rules of GC design (my standards):
1) dont start or finish a 9 witha Par 3 2) first hole/10th hole should be a Par 4 relatively open and safe for your drive, don't get crazy demanding on a golfers' first swings of the day. 3) no blind drives (example Furman course with the dang periscope) Who thought that up? Safety issue. 4) do one drivable par 4 for excitement 5) double doglegs - nah. Don't trick it up. 6) keep OB to a minimum if possible, esp around the green, nobody likes hitting it OB multiple times
there's more I have forgotten
