We simply cannot drain clock with a lead under Riley

This continues to be a problem. When we need first downs we can’t get them. Cost us the SCAR game last year, almost cost us vs Pitt a few weeks before. Could have cost us the game tonight. A combo of the OL and conservative playcalling I suppose?

It's not the play calling. The offensive line can't get any push to run the ball. You have to be able to run the ball to chew up clock and we can't do it when people know we're going to run. It's a problem that's been going on well before Garrett Riley got here.

It goes back a lot farther than that. We lost the Pittsburgh back in 2016 because we couldn't get one yard in three plays.

IMO that was an anomaly in 2016 unrelated to our current situation. We are seeing the impact of Austin’s recruiting and now know why we took so many OL in the 26 class

It was not an anomaly. We have always struggled to run the ball in obvious run situations, even with championship teams. We were able to make up for it with elite skill players. It's always been an issue, we just don't have anything to make up for it anymore.

If the opposing team know for a fact we are going to run the ball, they just stack the box and it makes much harder to gain yards on the ground.
The issue is play calling. If the defense thinks we are definitely going to run, it opens up other options. Most the time, it puts their DBs in one on one situations that we can take advantage of. Our brain trust does not trust our QB to throw the ball in those situations and they don’t have the talent or imagination to scheme a running play that will work. Our last two possessions were three & outs. We need to stay aggressive and score.
We went three & out on our next to last possession against dook on three straight run plays. I believe two of the runs were QB keepers when our QB was hurt. A field goal on that possession would have ended the game.
It’s the play calling in those situations.

Well, if they know we are going to run it, throw a simple short yard pass. But not a 30 yarder.

like others said it predates riley and streeter, its dabos weird nervous energy combined with idiotic and obvious play calls by dabo.

Agreed, we can’t get 10 yards to ice the game, and in my mind, it’s because of our offensive playcalling. Sure, most teams can’t run the ball 3 times and always gain a first down, but you have to have some creativity to get TEN YARDS to win the game!!!!! That often includes a short pass to a TE, or WR, or RB….. TRUST your players to make a high percentage play and just TAKE THE GAME!! It’s just one reason we need a new playcaller at the end of the year…. And we can talk about 3rd and five near the 50 yard line play calls next….. lord have mercy!

I swear I think Dabo and Co tell everyone “protect the ball” and “no penalties, no holds” and it leads to them not playing full speed so that’s that you get. They gotta keep playing like usual like it’s a drive to win the game because that’s what it is. That’s the 4th straight game that we had a chance late with the ball, less than 5 min that we couldn’t “win” the game on offense and not give the ball back to the other team
