It would be cheaper for them to not renew and to move the few marketable brands to one of the superconferences. No need for them to continue to pay for a bunch of glorified Appalachian States, no offense to ASU of course.

There's still Option B - the "ACC" can go away if 9 schools (now) vote to dissolve the conference. Although the conference name would still exist, without members, then who's GOR does the Corporate office control?

ESPN according to Sports Media has until Feb 2025 to notify the ACC if they plan pull the financial plug in 2027.

I think ( who cares just saying ) if the ACC was smart after most current schools leave that ACC would try to be the best Group of 5 Conference by pursueing USF, Memphis, Tulane, Liberty, and try to convince Wake Forest, Ga Tech, Syracuse, Boston College, Duke, and SMU to remain in revamped ACC. It would be in the best interest at this time for California, Stanford to hook-up with Oregon State, Washington State and six other West Coast / Mountain West schools.

Those of you who think we are going to do this to stick to “E$PN/ Disney”, do you realize that they own the media rights of the SEC and the CFP?

They think everyone is out to get us. Even ABC/ESPN who has contributed millions of dollars to Clemson and provided marketing and praise for our athletic programs that you can’t put a price on.

It's so cheap for them, why would ESPN not renew it?

I suppose the SEC could pressure ESPN if they didn't want the ACC contract extended. Otherwise, ESPN will certainly renew because it undervalues ACC TV rights big time.
ESPN won't give up these bargain basement rights without big time pressure from someone they fear or getting something in return.

They won’t be bargain basement anymore after FSU, Clemson, and ND wave goodbye. Then a new much deeper basement will exist. ESPN will have max flexibility to renegotiate or move on and let the ACC find a new media partner.

You are assuming these schools will be successful in court prior to 2027
Mar 19, 2024, 5:22 PM
|
|
I'm not. I think it's somewhere between slim and none any members leave within 3-4 years because we are talking (1) very lengthy litigation (2) that is likely to fail.
If the top 3-4 schools do leave the conference, of course ESPN will cancel.
The only point in discussing ESPN not extending is it could make it easier for schools to leave the ACC in 2027.

ESPN would be silly NOT to extend the current agreement with the ACC -- they are getting decent content for a bargain rate EVEN IF Clemson and FSU jump to another conference.
In fact, I expect ESPN to use the extension as a carrot to lower ACC resistance on Clemson and FSU moving to the SEC -- if the ACC makes the same without those two schools, how can they claim damages?
