I know a lot of people have wondered if head coach Dabo Swinney will make any staff changes this offseason. It's my understanding he was back Friday and they've had a staff meeting, and from what I am hearing there are no changes expected at this time.

Not what I was hoping I hear. Really hoped Scott would come back in some manner. Very nervous that we aren’t making any changes to our offense/Streeter or the hire of some type of offensive analyst to assist Streeter. Our offense has no identity. However, I love Dabo and I’ll trust that he knows best.

Don't think some things won't change. Jeff Scott will be involved on a non-paid position on an advisory basis. He can't take a paying job without losing his severance from S Fla. FYI.

That's sometimes the case with some of these contracts but one way to solve that: Pay him more than the yearly severance. lol.

Source of your information ? That is not always the case. In fact, it seldom is in the coaching world when fired. Charlie Weiss is Exhibit A.

I'm not speaking for the other poster but I know it's all over social media that the Scott's moved back to the upstate. That and wishful thinking may be driving it. Just saying.

Where he moved has nothing to do with whether or not his severance comes with a non-compete that prohibits him from working for a period of time.

Unlike most sports fans, including those here, he is seeing the long term and likely developing Streeter and Goodwin. I'm sure he knows there is room to grow for both of them. He wants people who are a part of Clemson culture and not just journeymen coaches looking for the best money.

Somewhat agree with you but I would have agreed more with you 8-9 years ago maybe but we are not a coaching development program… that’s not what you do coming off 6 playoffs and 4 natty appearances, winning two titles… I’m 100% for guys from the program in other roles like position guys but we have two much talent for guys to get two years to “see if they can develop into good coordinators”. We could have hired the absolute best available on both sides of the ball and who knows what those years hold. I def think since we are in the bed with em we should hang on for another year and see if we see any improvement at this point

Glad to know it's only Dabo heading on Steady Eddy style.

And toying with a near .500 record for Cabo to make changes. He has decided he has his guys and he’s willing to wait for them to become top-notch coaches… Instead of doing what he should’ve done in the first place, we just go higher the absolute best coach is available for what used to be in a leap program.

David, a question about staff changes.
Jan 9, 2023, 6:31 PM
|
|
Once upon a time the AFCA coaches convention was the "job fair" for assistant coaches. It was where coaches with openings interviewed and coaches looking to move up took a couple of briefcases full of resumes and distributed them.
Is that still the case?
If so, then we should know something in a week or so. (It is possible that Dabo has told some coaches they won't be back next year, but he is giving them the chance to find another job so they technically aren't fired. You seem to be hearing that is not the case this year for Dabo.)

...how does what we've witnessed out of our WRs under Grisham in terms of recruiting, development, and execution not warrant a change? Glad I wasn't expecting an upgrade.

Maybe Dabo will send his coordinators to other colleges and see what they do to pick up new ideas for the offense and defense. He has done that in the past.

I am not thrilled about the hires to begin with, but you absolutely need to give them more than one year.
If we continue to slide next year, I think he needs to make a move.

We don’t need staff changes.
Our young coordinators are smart, hard working guys; their year vs year improvement from first year to second year will be the one in which most improvement happens.
From the position coach level, we can expect the same improvement same out of Thomas Austin.
(*). If things look flat, or if improvement is not obvious after end of 2023 season, then that would be the time for when the hard conversations with those assistant coaches would need to happen in earnest.
Thanks as always for the personnel updates, David.
