Is Texas a Good Matchup or Not?

Dec 21, 2024, 9:35 AM

I have seen a lot of people say that Texas was our best possible draw in the 1st round…is this mostly due to the fact that we don’t have to play in a frigid game up north or is due to some on the field factor?

Most analysts/chattering class types seem to think that Clemson’s weakness/strengths match up horribly with Texas ‘s ie they have the top pass defense and without a clear first choice RB we will be forced to pass offense. This partly explains the spread IMO.

In our favor, Ewers is not a mobile QB so that should benefit our defense but if Ewers really struggles wouldn’t they just put in Arch? Also Pitt’s QB wasn’t exactly mobile and dude threw for like 350 + against us.

So other than the non frozen field what makes
Texas a really favorable draw for us?

It's favorable because we aren't in the Pop Tart Bowl

I agree but the Pop Tart trophy now has a built in toaster. No other game trophy has that

Indiana would have been a better draw ;)

No, Texas is not a good matchup for Clemson.

Yes and no.

Yes - they have struggled against man coverage and we run man coverage as much as anyone, it is our bread and butter.

No - they run outside zone more than anyone and average about 6 yards a pop. We struggle with outside zone and give up over 5 yards a run. They run as much outside zone as anyone.

There are a few more oddities like those but those are the biggest two IMO. So depending on which stat line you look at you can convince yourself either way.

When you cant run and you cant stop the run

It’s all relative

I think Texas’ pass defense is a big problem. We are going to have to air the ball out to beat them and the WR’s are going to have to turn 50-50 balls into 80-20 balls

I think they are the best draw we could have gotten for our defense because we just don’t have a good plan for stopping a mobile QB. BUT, just because they are the best matchup for our defense doesn’t mean they still won’t hand 30-40 points on us.

I think we need 35-40 points to win this game, and that’s going to take great pass protection and elite WR/QB play with zero turnovers

Defensively, I don’t have high we need to force turnovers. We know Texas is going to try and run that ball on us early and we need to turn them over early and often.

we are not a receiver core built for 50/50 balls. when was the last time we caught a 50/50 ball? probably back when we had higgins and ross? That is not and will not be a part of our offense. Our best receivers are shorter, dont have any 6'4-6'5 threats anymore.

Clemson ranks better offensively in 12 categories and in 12 special teams and penalties categories, but only in 3 defensive categories.

Looks like the Tigers will have to win the turnover battle and commit fewer penalties in order to win the game.
