Purple Heart Day. I didn’t know there was such a thing. Guess there is a “Day” for every single thing now.

Yes I thought that a few years ago. Some folks have too much time on their hands I guess. No one even has a clue it was ever a thing. This one sounds like a keeper though.

August 7th is the day our Marines landed on Guadalcanal.
It’s a big day and possibly why that day was selected. Before 7AUG1942 the Japanese Empire was expanding … after 7AUG1942 the Japanese Empire steadily diminished.

Well that's a good one. I would like to read another of your stories. Those were fascinating. Anyway, they have a day for everything. Look what tomorrow is...

All those were from 3 years ago. Like I once posted- if I included certain things, someone would go to jail (ending with "not me, of course").

It seems like all the other "celebrations" get a whole month
Why not give the ones who really deserve it a month also

in Law who was a 1st Cav guy in Viet Nam. He was visiting my wife and I last summer and in 30 years of him being my Father in Law I had never seen him with his shirt off. He was getting ready to swim and I saw some old scarring on his side.
As a former military member when I have spoke with him about his 20 year career and we both talked at times about deployments to combat zones, never did the fact that he was wounded come up. I have seen his DD214 and did not see any mention of a Purple Heart so I asked him about it.
He replied that in Viet Nam, he and his buddies always in a "graveyard humor" mindset called it the Purple Heart the "slow man's award" I know that might offend some, but I think this is not a disrespectful position from him but a coping mechanism for the blood and life of his loss of friends.

Did he explain how he got the scars? Nothing "slow"

about a wounded man if he was flying in one of the 1st Cav's choppers (I was asleep on a mountainside when hit with the 1st bullet - that's about as slow as you can get). Those guys saved the day for a lot of guys on the ground. My DD-214 did not list a Purple Heart, Expert M-14 marksmanship badge, and a couple of other things for close to 40 years. And still doesn't have two awards that I was presented face to face with company leaders. If he was wounded in action, he should have received it and the recognition that comes with it.

a 2 tour Vietnam guy. One tour as a butterbar and 1st louie Platoon Leader and Company XO, then went back as a Company Commander. His wife explained it in this way. Bob saw a large number of officers that went to SE Asia to collect their Bronze Star and Purple Heart on the way to Field Grade and beyond so he was very jaded about the award system. In my discussions w/him I would confirm this point of view.
One of his buddies who was a Warrant Officer told me Bob was injured leading defense and evac of a hot LZ when a Huey took and RPG hit and Bob was hit by spall/splinters from the rocket/Huey. But I don't know for certain.
He was close friends with some pretty legendary Cav guys, including LTC Hal Moore and SGM Basil Plumley as well as COL JW Thurman and GEN Gordon Sullivan and having met all four of those guys during my career they spoke highly of Bob as a true field leader. He commanded 6 Companies / Troops in his career but failed to retire as a LTC as he spoke his mind, especially when it came to selfish behavior by his brother officers. Bottom line he didn't play the game.
Quite an intimidating guy to ask for his daughter's hand as a young LT. Thirty years later, I'm closer with him than my own dad. He went on to run the Army's Tank and Bradley simulator training program SIMNET and now all his old Vietnam buddies and mentors of Korean war era are passing it's hard to watch all that wisdom fade.
