CWS is irrelevant anyway

"If a tree falls in the forest, and no one hears it fall, does it make a sound?"
Similarly, if a team wins a championship, and no one is watching, does it really count? Last year's CWS championship between SC and UF had an average rating of 1.6 (http://www.collegebaseballdaily.com/2011/07/01/2011-college-world-series-ratings-improve/) which was actually an improvement over the previous year.
A 1.6 rating put last year's 2011 championship series on par with the mighty 2012 New Orleans Bowl between San Diego State and LA-Lafayette.

national championships in baseball we'd be going nuts.
No sense in trying to minimize it because we haven't been able to do what they have done. Just sounds kind of like what they used to sound like when we used to beat their brains in regularly in football.

You're right. I would love for Clemson to be there, but it has no real significance unless you've never won anything like the SC rednecks.

It is not irrelevant in SC - college baseball is a moderate-

ly big deal in the Palmetto state. Not just Clemson and USuC, but also Coastal, The Citadel and even CofC these days (although 15-20 years ago CofC drew less than some high schools -never more than 100 fans).
Outside of SC, it's much less of a deal. In the ACC footprint, only FL comes close. GA and NC have some interest. VA, MD, PA, NY and MA? Fuggetaboutit. College soccer (and in some states lacrosse) is a bigger deal...

Attitudes like this is why in state recruiting goes their way. If you were a high school baseball player and read on these boards that we could care less about baseball what would you think?

about baseball at Clemson as do most schools around the state. SC - along with FL, TX, AZ and CA - is a hotbed for college baseball. If you don't think recruits don't know that college baseball is more of a regional sport, you are wrong. It's why the NCAA allows so few scholarships and so many players are on partials. There are a lot more good high school players than there are scholarships available because it is a rather minor, mostly regional sport. High school baseball stars (no matter where they are from) should seriously consider Clemson because we really care about baseball here. Why go to Maryland and play in front of your teammates' girlfriends and parents while thousands of your classmates and professors are across campus watching lacrosse?

Dont try to minimize it. I want to Clemson to win the CWS and i want to be happy about when i do. The key is to get better and beat them, not to minimize their successes.

The Omaha CWS is the savior of college baseball
Jun 23, 2012, 3:17 PM
|
|
Without the CWS being structured the way it is - and without a city like Omaha as a year in and year out host that does a fantastic job hosting - the college baseball championships would generate about as much national interest as the regular college baseball season does. Not much. ESPN would still broadcast the finals and maybe put some of the playoffs on 2 or U, but it is the format (and to some degree the Omaha tradition) that make for compelling television.

ah, irony.
Using incorrect grammar while correcting someone else's spelling AND calling yourself intelligent. That's some funny stuff.

On a national scale yes. But I remember when my Citadel boys made it in 1990 and it seemed like the most important game in the world. Of course we lost two straight and went home but it was still cool to be relevant on a national stage.

I must point out - to all of the Gamecocks who said the Orange Bowl was "irrelevant" - that even it got a 4.56 rating.
Obviously if Clemson was playing tomorrow and possibly en route to a 3rd national title I'd be really, really excited and proud. Unfortunately we are not, and SCAR is. So go Wildcats!

better today as a TV product without the "ping" of bats as well, which is building viewership. It's a great accomplishment to be there, and an outstanding accomplishment to emerge as the champion. I have to admire USuC's run and hope that we are bringing in the talent to challenge it soon.
It's legit. No two ways about it.
