Common theme

Today read an article about Peter Woods admitting he was too heavy and not in shape last season. Over the last 5 years a common theme is key players admitting to not being in good football shape and or too heavy the prior season. Barrett Carter, DJU, Peter Woods, several OL, etc.
At what point is the S&C program going to get a look? Carter's proday numbers were a prime example of guys not progressing physically. Either you come to Clemson as a well trained athlete or you leave at best where you started. Something has to give between the results, conditioning, and injuries this team has sustained.

Dabo tends to have soft teams unless he has a no-nonsense assistant

like Venables or Morris to whip guys into shape and instill toughness. It happened in the early part of Dabo’s tenure and I feel that it crept back in after Venables left.
I’m hoping that Allen will be that tough coach we need who won’t put up with soft, lazy players.

There is something to be said for intensity coming from the coaches and that bleeding over to the team.
Right now I'm just seeing guys not getting leaner and more explosive. I really feel that Dabo was able to recruit complete athletes so the S&C program never had to be elite, it's harder to get those level guys now. Guys like Vic Beasley came in as explosive athletes that needed to get better as players, I can't name a guy that's come in and gotten more explosive than he was. I really highlight the OL with this, how many big maulers come in and never see the field bc they never develop physically (ie lose weight and get leaner and more explosive or get strong enough to start getting push on contact). Luckily with Matt Luke the OL talent is surging and guys coming are already there physically.

Actually Vic Beasley got stronger after he came to Clemson

He came in as an undersized defensive end and bulked up and became a first rounder. He had the motivation and the drive. It's not all on the coaches. There's something to be said for work ethic.

Vic Beasley put on 20lbs after 4 years in the S&C he was not crazy undersized at all. He was a raw athlete. He was 225 coming out of HS with a long lean frame.
I don't deny work ethic and players are mostly responsible for their progression but something is way off when you keep seeing the same issues and guys keep testing poorly at combines and pro days.

Yea i think Allen will bring back an edge but once it's elite comp I suspect S&C will get exposed again.

allen still has to prove himself, and there is more to coaching than yelling, but thus far he seems to be a good fit and just what the doctor ordered.

Clemson lost one ACC game, one!!! Louisville was a bad game, but if I remember correctly we are the ACC champs. That is not getting pushed around badly. Our defense was porous at times, but pushed around by the ACC does not compute.

If you look at the ACC games we lost the last two years, there was a theme...

needs a guy or two to get in these guys faces. Dabo believes in hard nosed football--he is, after all, a former bama player and coach-- but he may not always be the best playing that role. he needs tough assistants.

Players gotta show up and put in the work, give the effort, be accountable. The equipment is there.

If it's not productive work who's fault is it?
Can you list 3 guys that came in and truly made a jump in athletic ability? I can't but I can rattle off failed OL, guys who sank in the draft once their numbers were out, and guys who stayed injured.

guys that wanted it and put in the effort and worked hard. You can't always make people work hard. You see people at your work all the time that have potential, but lack work ethic.
Payton Page transformed from a 400 pounder to a possible mid round draft pick.

with a 65% Blue Chip Ratio loses to a team with no 5 stars and only (2) 4 stars on their 85 man roster-

Motivation. commitment, discipline, intensity, work ethic etc are primarily internal attributes.

It does seem that our strength and conditioning program has been talk about of not doing a good job during Dabo's entire HC-ing history. It's past time that he does something serious about getting that part of our FB program with top S & C folks on board with getting our guys in top shape and strong. IMO it past time to say that enough is enough and clean up that part of our FB program. More than one talking to with a warning is more than enough before doing whatever it takes to fix that part of our FB program!!!

Elite athletes cover up alot of short comings. The OL was masked by guys like DW4 escaping pressure, Etienne breaking 2 tackles in the backfield before breaking loose, Lawerence avoiding sacks to deliver downfield strikes.
When push came to shove and you needed a yard teams like Ohio St, LSU, UGA, etc are winning in the trenches on both sides of the ball and it's been that way for a while. Clemson is known as a finesse team and was known for exotic blitzes.
