The player from Maryland who scored the “winning” basket took four steps after he stopped dribbling before he shot.

As long as you're heading toward the basket, you can take as many steps as you

want. If you shuffle a little and looks awkward, you get called for one step.
It;s getting hard to watch.

First, I agree that traveling is out of control, especially in the NBA. Unwatchable.
However, you technically get 2 and a half steps. If you pick your dribble up while in the process of taking a step, you still get 2 after that. I’ve watched it multiple times and that’s what I saw. He picked it up right before his foot came down, then took his 2 steps.

Everyone should watch the Youtube video about this very thing. There is one clip in there of LeBron walking down the court with the ball on his hip, yelling out instructions......must have taken 20 steps.....refs never said a word.

The step you are you taking when you pick up your dribble does not

count. So when the ball touches both hands, the first foot that comes down does not count towards the 2 steps a player is allowed. The two steps starts after that. I think this is a source of confusion with many people.
That said, the Maryland player did take 4 steps - 1 while picking up his dribble and 3 more after picking it up. It should've been called but obviously wasn't.
I don't think traveling is out of control in college - it usually gets called. The NBA is a different story.
Palming/carrying is mostly just something old guys get mad about. LOL The egregious ones where the hand is completely under the ball usually get called, but there's quite a bit of leniency with how that is officiated. I personally don't mind it at all because i think the game is faster and more exciting when the players are given a little leeway there. This is speculation on my part, but i think if carrying was called super tight (the rule states ANY part of the hand under the ball) the defenders would gain a big advantage over the offensive players. That's not the kind of basketball i want to see, but to each his own.

This is correct. I only saw 2 steps after he picked it up

everyone is jumping in the step while he licked his dribble up. That one doesn’t count.
In theory- you get 2.5 steps

He traveled.
The entire game hinged on that one play.
The refs are trained and obligated to see that he traveled.
Why give one team an great advantage by not calling a travel in that situation?
