5th graders are required to do that here...I am not one who sees the value in such an activity

yes, there is a value

The value is being able to memorize stuff. It takes effort to be able to do this. You got to want it. Whether they are memorizing the Gettysburg Address or an Eminem song is immaterial.

what precipitated the Address.
Remember: Don't charge across a mile of open field, In July sun, with no coordinated artillery support or tanks to soften up the defense. You listening Dabo?

The teacher should have just posted his powerpoints at the beginning of the semester and told us to memorize them. So, yea, I guess learning how to memorize things you can look up in .5 seconds has some sort of value, in that when you have lazy teachers who have no idea how to write a test, you get questions about which standard (in a sea of standards with similar #'s) this thing or that thing applies to.

It's a lot more important to understand the context...

... if you're talking about a history class. If you're teaching speech however, there's no better example in the English language of the combination of brevity and eloquence. It's status is due more to how good a speech it was than the historical significance it represented. Being required to speak it out loud might have some value there.
