I think it's pretty close. U2 had great early albums

like Boy, October, and War, then in the mid 80s early 90s The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree, and Achtung Baby, but nothing good after that.
REM did pretty much the same but not much good after Green.

U2 topped with the 'The Joshua Tree', and has been on a long slide downhill since then.
REM did the same with 'Green'. All downhill (quickly) after that.

Confession time, I only know 3 REM songs. I bet all can guess those 3.

Also, I like free brownies, but if somebody breaks into my house to make them, I will not like it. Same issue.

Concerts REM used to have at UGa when I was at Clemson.
Early U2 wasn't bad R.E.M. started great and got a bit pretentious after awhile
One year on the way to Athens we saw 2 girls squatting and peeing on the side of 441. Saw them at the concert and used that as a conversation starter, scored a little make out session with the skinniest one behind the stage Good times

I find earlier U2 less annoying than REM's sort of ironic, minor-key, almost folk sound.

I like to day dream of what life would be like while making the money I make now, only paying $0.75 for a gallon of gas, and no cellphone nor internet bill.*
I also still pay for cable but that could more easily go away than cell or internet.

R.E.M. - Hands Down
Apr 5, 2018, 12:27 PM
|
|
Back when I was younger at Clemson bars were dry at midnight we used to go down to Athens. One time we walk into this bar and this band of high schoolers were playing their own music - no covers. Amazing. Their timing was spot on. The lyrics were awesome. The takeaway was that this group was one to follow. And, yes, it was R.E.M. One negative - there is good reason Michael Stipe shaved his head. He was one of the mangiest looking teenagers with a face full of zits and long, stringy, greasy hair.
