Is it really over?

Sep 2, 2024, 11:16 AM

No. But it is decision time for not just Dabo but the whole athletic department and university. The game has moved on past culture and doing the right thing at college.

Now it’s a business regardless of what anyone wants it to be. And to be successful you have to not just adapt but accept the reality of the workplace.

Ask Nick Saban who quit rather than adapt. And that’s a reasonable decision. The Clemson Administration has to decide if they want to adapt. I pushback on anyone who blames Dabo alone. Neff and company run the show and while this may create a Danny Ford kind of exit it’s not the first time Neff has said he’s got to do what’s right for Clemson.

And change may be the right thing. No a change of coach but philosophy/approach/rtc. No one says you can’t find cultural fits in the portal.

Realistically the kids know that playing for a winner who develops talent is what they’re after. No longer is an education the primary reason they are in school if they are a 4 or 5 star. NIL and NFL will drive their decisions and honestly it should.

Loyalty drops down low on the athlete’s priority list and, while I agree it is important, as with any business success drives profitability and that is now the Athletic Department’s responsibility to the school and State. Lack of success will hamper profitability a’la Tommy West and Tommy Bowden. Dabo has a split loyalty I admit but his main loyalty is to his employer not his employees.

In short, it is adapt or die and I prefer to have a great culture that’s wins at an elite level. That may require some changes and they may be hard for lots of folks.

But the model we are using continues to produce less than optimal results. In a business that creates change or the company ceases to either exist or remain a force in the industry. Most Clemson folks would not like either option listed above.

The decisions you speak of will not be made by Dabo or Neff or even Clements. Those big decisions will be made by the Board of Trustees, as well they should.

If as you state, CFB is now a big business the decisions you discuss will be made by the market place. Just that simple. Your product is in demand or it's not.

My guess is that a consistent 10-2 season with both an occasional ACC title and a CFP off berth will continue to sell. That may be doable in the ACC if FSU and Miami don't sprint ahead of us.

I might add, that decision has already been made by the BOT. When they approved spending money to sue the ACC so as to leave the ACC, they stated the reason for leaving was to increase revenue so that Clemson could continue to compete at the highest level in all sports. Football is the cash cow for all other sports at Clemson. Therefore, the BOT is going to do whatever it takes to keep that cash cow alive and well.

You guys need to accept that your QB just doesn’t have it and grab a transfer like we did up in Cuse’. DJ wasn’t the answer and Klubnick clearly ain’t either(best of luck to FSU with DJ). You guys had your moment with massage parlor Watson and T law which made Dabo look like a saint. Is Dabo that great or was he just lucky with the quarterbacking?Dabo it’s time to get with the program and look at Miami and Cuse. We got stud Qb’s and you guys are falling further behind.

If he's such a stud QB why would he have transferred from Ohio State, a blue blood that could possibly be playing for a NC this year to Syracuse, a doormat of the ACC? I wish you guys were actually good so we could make you and your "stud" QB look like trash. Go back to your board.

We will win games but we are out of the playoffs now

We are not out of the playoff. You don't understand how the playoffs work.

Do you really think this team is a top 12 until right now? Yes, unless major changes and improvement are made, we are not playoff bound. We are gator bowl against Kentucky bound...again.

You don't have to be in the top 12 to make the playoffs.

It seems the easiest solution for the portal would be to stop signing so many “developmental” projects. I know we’ve hit on so many low level recruits, but the vast majority don’t really pan out that well.

Save some of those spots for experienced portal players that can have an immediate impact. We’re talking about 2-4 players per year, nothing more.

Swinney’s record at Clemson with Brent Venables on his coaching staff (2012-21): 121-17 (.876 win percentage).

Swinney’s record at Clemson without Brent Venables on his staff (2008-11; 2022-present): 49-27 (.644).

Sheesh.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Interesting ...

Sep 2, 2024, 12:45 PM [ in reply to Re: Is it really over? ]

Swinney’s HC record with Deshaun Watson (32-3) and Trevor Lawrence (34-2) starting is 65-5 (.939)

Swinney’s HC record without DW4 and TL16 starting is 105-39 (.729)

Damm fine record.

IMHO, Clemson should never pay Dabo Swinney to leave his contract early. Yet if Dabo ever chooses to leave, Clemson should accommodate him. My take is Dabo's coaching reputation will take some hits this year and maybe next for not adapting with the game. He will be frustrated and will eventually divulge his perspective in public. And one day, Dabo may leave Clemson at his own discretion.

Unlike others, I believe, Dabo is too competitive to leave the game behind. If he ever decides to leave Clemson, I see him leaving for a P2 (SEC or B1G) program who pays him highly, rolls out the red carpet for Dabo and his chosen assistants, and offers more revenue share for recruits as part of their league TV contract. In other words, Dabo could leave in frustration over the poor ACC infrastructure and seek a better paying opportunity at a school who is hungry and has better access to NIL and Portal funds.

Lets hope Dabo and Clemson turn this season around, and Dabo rebounds to a Clemson success level that takes other contingency options off the table.

Since basically this is the professionalization of college sports

Sep 2, 2024, 12:25 PM

it quits being what I have always loved.

If that is what it is, then I'll probably just quit caring altogether.

I think College football is doing just what NASCAR did in the 90's. And in several years the stadiums will be just as empty.

I agree, but the answer as a program can't be to simply throw in the towel because we don't like the direction things are heading. A successful football program lifts all boats, financially, academically and athletically. Cooler heads need to prevail and get their minds around a long-term strategy to address all of the current deficits in our program before it becomes unfixable.

There is too much at stake not to have an all hands on deck approach to solving it.
