I need a people mover vehicle, no minivan, recommend a SUV

I am leaning towards Ford, Chevy, or Jeep, but also considering Toyota and Kia.
Of those companies, I'm looking more mid/large size so for Ford its the Explorer. For Chevy, the Traverse, for Jeep the soon to be released Grand Cherokee L, for Toyota the Highlander, and Kia the Telluride.
I've had Fords, Jeeps, and Toyota in the past, but never the others. Does anyone here have an Explorer or Traverse? I'm guess the GCL will pretty much be the same as the existing Grand Cherokee except a little bigger to fit the 3rd row. Does anyone have the Jeep's cousin Dodge Durango?
Does anyone have a Telluride? Those are getting lots of hype. I don't know much at all about Kia, but people seem to be loving the Telluride.
The Chevy Traverse seems to be the biggest without stepping up to a Tahoe/Yucan or Expedition. I can actually fit in the 3rd row of a Traverse, unlike the Highlander (I can fit if I sit diagonally). I've never owned a Chevy though, does anyone have a 2018 or newer Traverse? 2018 is their current look, prior to was an older body frame.
Does anyone have a newer Explorer (2020 or later)? Curious to hear if going back to rear-wheel drive made a difference (I think they were front-wheel drive from 2012 to 2019).
I really do love the 4Runner, but that doesn't seem like a good family option. If I was looking to take a vehicle off road and wanted a SUV over a truck, I'd probably get a 4Runner, but I'm not, so I'm looking for basically a 4 door minivan with all-wheel drive.

I have yet to hear anything negative about them.
For Jeeps, Chevy, Ford, I hear mixed reviews, for Kia it's like 100% positive.
A mechanic told me to get the Highlander if I don't want to see him. I thought that was interesting information.

The Highlander is definitely a contender. I like low maintenance. I don't want to spend much free time or time-off from work at a shop dealing with car crap. I worry if I get a Chevy, Jeep, or Ford that will inevitably happen. Toyota, Kia, and Honda seem to be more reliable.

and is super reliable, it just absolutely has no style about it. By the time we traded ours in, we just were tired of looking at that big silver lifeless box in the garage. It's the closest to a van without getting a van, and I think the new ones look even more van-like.
210k miles with VERY FEW issues, we did tear the interior up, but had 3 small kids in there and doggies.

It looks like a 4 door minivan. At least the others try to like like an SUV. The Pilot is straight up minivan. If they did a redesign, I'd consider it for sure.

So I have tried to find a used one but at first not many out there so I assumed most people liked and didn’t want to trade. Some others showing up now that were probably 2 year leases brand new. I like the m and have owned a Kia which was reliable and low maintenance.

Which is funny, because its essentially the same truck they've made since 2010.
Those things need a serious injection of HP though. I drove one a few months back when I was getting teh oil changed in our older 4runner. A vehicle the size of a Tahoe needs more than a NA V6 can provide.

lot in Denver for our ride to Telluride and back a few years ago. I was pretty pumped because I found it in a sea of Kia Sedonas and Jeep Libertys, and it was a brand new TRD Pro with about 200 miles on it (I was a little shocked to see that trim line in a rental fleet too).
The pros were that it snowed from Gunnison to Telluride and that truck was a mountain goat in the white stuff. The downside was that on the non-snowy portions of the drive it was just a bucking bronco on the road. Horrible ride seems to be a trend for any current Toyota truck or SUV with the Pro or Off Road package.

I'll be honest and state that I had no idea what the packages meant; The TRD OR was more expensive than the Sport package, so I figured it must have more stuff, so I bought that.
Holy crap--it rode terrible. Like a wagon terrible. I thought it might be the BFG Long Trail T/A's it had OEM, so I swapped them out for some Michelin LTX's. $1200 later, its wasn't the tires.
So I took it in to the dealer and complained, and they said there was a TSB for the rear springs, so they replaced them. It had 3 leaf, leaf springs in the rear, and they replaced them with 4 leaf, leaf springs. GOOD GOD WHAT DID THEY DO? It just kind of bounced over bumps then, rather than giving in and cushioning the ride.
I traded it for a Tahoe a few months later.
Edit: I noticed that the 2021 model STILL has rear drum brakes. I don't know of any other production vehicle that still uses drum brakes...except for a Tacoma.

Telluride seems to be best bang for the buck on the market today in the class. People who own em love em.
The new Explorer does get good reviews but hard to believe you'll achieve the same long term reliability and resale value once out of warranty with the Ford than the Kia. Just stay away from the Chevy---their current midsize SUV offerings are years behind the others.

And, interesting info about Chevy. I am really leaning towards a Traverse for the size. I like that an adult can actually fit in the 3rd row. I also like that when the 3rd row is up, there is still plenty of cargo space. It seems like a really good option for family haulers. But... I don't want a hunk of junk either.
I've never owned anything GM, so can't speak to them. I've had 3 Jeeps. All have had issues / recalls. I'm not sure I would want to buy another Chrysler / Fiat vehicle. But... that upcoming Grand Cherokee L looks really good. Best looking one on the market IMO. Maybe I should lease a new one? We'll see soon enough I suppose.

quality, tech, and design. The trucks have had quality and drivetrain problems since they redesigned in 2014. The diesel HD trucks are stable, but the gas versions of the 1500's suffer problems up through the current MY.
I'd be hard pressed to buy any GM product at this point, unless it were a diesel HD truck or a Corvette.

Just reading interwebs reviews. I don't know much at all about the tech or safety or reliability of GM, but the reviews seem mixed at best. Maybe Ford really is better?

People who own their trucks certainly seem to think highly of them.
I won't own a Ford for other reasons from years ago that I won't let go of, so I'll never know anything about them. Given the choice between Ubering everywhere I need to go and buying any Ford, I'm Ubering.

Although, I guess I wouldn't rule out a Tahoe or GMC Yukon. I'm pretty sure I don't want Suburban or Yukon XL size. That's too big for my needs.
I really like the Traverse, but I just don't know anyone who has a newer one. They look sharp, especially the RS package.

Good info. I like the Acadia, very sharp looking. It looks better than the Traverse, but yeah, I like the size of the Traverse better, so that is why I didn't mention GMC. The Traverse seems perfectly fine. A good "soccer mom/dad" vehicle that's not a minivan. It's on my shortlist.

I think it shares a lot of the same parts, but the body is smaller. I don't fit in the 3rd row of an Acadia but in a Traverse it's not a problem. The third row in the Traverse is actually roomier than the 3rd row in a Tahoe.

That's what my wife has. She loves it, and she's always been a fan of sedans. It's the first SUV she's had as her car.
The gas mileage on that SUV is superb compared to most, but yeah, it's a little smaller than Explorers or Traverses.

Of all you've listed it's a Telluride or 4Runner. The rest can all DIAF.
3rd row small SUVs all suck. The 3rd row is useless unless you're a family of shorties.
Grand Cherokee L will be a brand new generation of a FIAT built SUV. Run away. Fast.

Interesting feedback, thanks. The 3rd row on most is pretty useless, except the Traverse. I am 6 feet tall and I can fit in the 3rd row. With any other "SUV" I'm either cramped but can fit (Durango and Explorer for example) or I don't fit really at all (Highlander and Mazda CX9 come to mind).
It's looking like the Telluride may be the way to go.

It looks like every last one of them starts in the 30k range. I was thinking if I go Chevy or Jeep or Ford I may lease due to reliability concerns (I've never leased though). Everything would be under warranty and if I don't like it, I can try again in 2 or 3 years.
If I buy I will trade in either my current Jeep Cherokee (2014) or Camery (2012). Both are paid off, so I'll probably sell one to Carvana or CarMax then use that as a down payment.
If I lease, I want brand new. If I buy, I want 60 months 0% financing. I would like to keep the total price with trade in under 35k. I'm willing to buy used, but to a limit. The Traverse for example had a redesign in 2018, so I would not buy a 2017. The Explorer just recently had one, but I'd be open to like a 2019 Explorer.

the ONLY downside (for me, anyway) is that I didn't need a V8 and the gas guzzling that comes with it....and the fact that I think they look reeeeaaaaallly dated from some angles
at least the 2010 4runner design still looks good all around
great great vehicle tho, wish i didn't have those 2 hang ups

At 105K miles on our V8 4runner, it gets about 17 mpg all around, as it rarely gets highway miles on it. I can't imagine the V6 version will do any better.

knocked out in < 30 minutes, $200, at least for me, isn't offering much value to the equation.
It's usually not a good idea to sell someone you know, even peripherally, a car (or a house, or well, anything of any value). It's kinda like you get rid of it, but you never really do.
I mean I sold a washer and dryer on Next door to someone I don't even know last October for $375, and got a calls about them monthly, up to and including earlier this month. And the washer was still under a full Lowe's warranty.

You tell me your asking price and if there’s a payoff, I get a cashiers check for you and the finance company, bring it to you, sign bill of sale and title it available or power of atty if not, we shake hands and I drive off in your truck. They aren’t doing anything magic.
The bigger cost in a state like TN where sales tax isn’t capped is in losing the ability to deduct the trade in value from the purchase price when calculating sales tax. Trading in a 40k car here is worth about $3700 I’m sales tax savings.

No need for anyone running around to finance companies, getting cashiers checks, all that stuff.
When i took my truck to Carmax, I drove up, they took some pictures, gave me a quote 10 minutes later, asked me if I wanted to do it, and then sent me to another area where I signed the paperwork, and they gave me a check.
There was no payoff on mine, so it went even faster.
Also, I found out that usually car dealers will give you less for a trade than carmax will. And then there is that thing with a trade in that car dealers do, conflating the trade in/new car purchase etc.

Rhyme or reason. It is worth checking with carvana and similar though, as they’ll often beat carmax and they’ll come pick it up at your house.

All company vehicles, so I’m on highway 95% of the time. I’ve got 61,000 miles on current one, and it’s averaging 28.0 mpg. Pleanty of power also, but I rarely drive it hard. Still not a single rattle in it....

The Highlander has to be a consideration for me. I prefer the 2019 style over the brand new ones, so for a Highlander, I would consider used, but only 2019. They didn't have Apple Car Play till then, and I want that for my next car.

I found i didn't use it near as much as I thought I would.
It was just easier to connect through bluetooth, and play whatever music through whatever app I was using at the time. It just doesn't seem to add much value in that process, IMO.
Some cars are coming with wireless carplay, so that may be more useful, I dunno. My phone still requires a cable to charge, but it seems it would be odd to require a wire to connect to Carplay on a phone that wirelessly charges.

to disconnect (Ford and GMC). With GMC it would crash in an hour and only work again if the vehicle was restarted. With FORD, it disconnects every 2 minutes or so except for some rare occasions when it will last 30 mins.
I love Android AUTO b/c waze and music. But I'm going to wreck one day trying to unplug and reconnect to phone.
They are coming out with a wired wireless module which seems dumb. Why doesn't it just work wirelessly already.

One of the apps in the GMC I just got rid of--I think it was Siriusxm--won't start working unless its wired in, but if you unplug the phone while its running, it will continue working wirelessly. Its very strange.
I've read it takes additional h/w for Android auto/Carplay work wirelessly. I posted the other day about Porsche doing a major software update that not only sped up the car but also gave it Android Auto/Carplay wireless ability. I guess they built in the necessary hardware to do it, but didn't originally program it to work wirelessly.
That would be nice if all cars had the capability and all it took was a software update to work.
For your disconnecting issue, you may want to check your phone cable. I don't know about Androids, but Apple cables have to be a certain resistance in the cable, else it won't always work correctly. If the cable isn't "MFi" (made for Iphone) certified, it will sometimes do flakey things...like connect/disconnect repeatedly like you describe. But it doesn't do that all the time, which is the maddening part. Sometimes the cheap cable will work just fine. Anyway, try a new, better cable. Might fix your issue.

Make sure you're cleaning out the connection port on your phone. A paper clip works well. You'll be surprised how much lint gets in there. I found when I started losing connections regularly with Android Auto, that was the solution.
I don't like how it likes to go nuts on you if you haven't updated it. That's a pain in the ###.

I had a 2017 Explorer before I traded it in for my truck. I really did love it. It's a good ride for people and not too bad with the third row. It's also a deceptively heavy and big car. My only real beef with it was that it was a bit of a bear to park with the front visibility. I can park my truck easier.
I know the Explorers only got even more badass in the later models.
The Traverse is great (almost as big as a Tahoe), but one of our friends has one and she hasn't been 100 percent satisfied. But I've enjoyed the ride in it. I believe it has more HP than the Explorer.
Keep this in mind with the Explorer: Used ones are EVERYWHERE. Which means you have a lot of haggling power with dealers to get what you want. You can easily snag a nice deal on a former rental Explorer, which you know was kept up well. We got a great deal on mine when I bought it in 2018.
The Highlander is a good, reliable SUV, but it looks too much like a mom car if that matters to you. I felt the Explorers and Traverses looked a lot more bad ###.
Forgot to mention the Acadia (mentioned now in another post). This is what my wife has and she likes it a lot, and she's never really cared for SUVs. It has great gas mileage compared to other SUVs, but it's going to be a little smaller. You won't have much space in the third row or as much in the cargo.
