Indoor Track National Championships Day 3 Meet Thread

Courtney Lawrence is getting underway right now in the men's shot put; he's the first competitor of the day for the Tigers. He enters the meet ranked in a tie for 15th out of the 16 in the event, so he'll probably be another long shot to qualify. But once again, anything can happen in the throws because all it takes is one spectacular effort.

They'll switch the coverage over to a different link later in the day when the women's events start, so when that happens, here's the link to the main menu of NCAA track coverage on ESPN so you can find whichever one is live:

Live stream (ESPN+): https://www.espn.com/watch/catalog/74d54e57-c7e6-38fd-9fe8-b98414ad0ea9/ncaa-track-field#bucketId=29779&sourceCollection=Browse_By_League

You can also go back and watch the previous coverage there if you're interested.

Lawrence improves his mark on the second attempt, throwing 61 ft 6.75 in this time. This moves him up to 8th place after round 2.

Courtney improves once again on his third throw, this time going 61 ft 7.75 in. He winds up in 9th place after round 3, just holding on inside of the top 9 that qualify for the final. So Lawrence will advance and have 3 more attempts, making him the 3rd Clemson athlete and the 2nd male Tiger to qualify for the finals in this meet. (The other 2 were Tarees Rhoden and Marie Forbes.) Nice to finally have a borderline qualifier go our way after it seemed like so many went against us in heartbreaking fashion yesterday.

The 10th place athlete's best throw was 61 ft 7.50 in; Lawrence's was 61 ft 7.75 in, so Courtney qualified by just a fourth of an inch!

The shot put is now final. Sorry I didn't provide a live field series, the ESPN stream didn't show the finals at all, so I didn't even realize it had started. I should've known better than to trust the stream, but it's still really frustrating the way they operate it. I think it had to do with them getting ready to bring the commentators on and putting together highlight packages. But still, to not show any of the finals of the shot put at the national championships ought to be criminal. Especially after showing every throw of the prelims. It just makes no sense. But I guess we should expect that from ESPN. Sorry for ranting, that just annoys me to no end. Regardless, here's what happened:

Lawrence's improved again on his fourth attempt, throwing 62 ft 1.75 in, his best mark of the competition. Then he threw 61 ft 4.75 in on attempt 5 and 60 ft 10.75 in on attempt 6. He finishes 9th overall after the final, one place away from scoring. Would've been cool if he could've moved up to 8th to score at least a point, but just getting to final was still good considering how close it was. And he was seeded 15th coming in, so he significantly outperformed his rank. All in all, a great indoor season for Lawrence, excited to see what he can do at outdoors.

Rhoden runs 1:47.79 to finish 5th. He scores 4 points for Clemson. He went out hard as he always does and held the lead for about the first 400, but he couldn't hold off everybody. Still, that's a very solid result for Tarees, especially considering he was ranked 13th before the meet. That caps off another great indoor season for Rhoden. Looking forward to watching him do big things in outdoor as well.

Updated Team Standings

With the men's 800 meters now final, that's all for the Clemson men at this competition. The 4 points that Rhoden scored will be the only points scored for the men's team at the meet. Marie Forbes is currently responsible for the entirety of the women's team scoring with the 4 points she scored in the weight throw on Thursday. However, the women still have Shantae Foreman left to compete in the triple jump at 6:30, so they will have 1 more opportunity to bolster their score.

Currently, the women are in a 4-way tie for 24th, while the men are in a 2-way tie for 40th. I'll update the team scores as the meet moves along.

The men's portion of the meet is now over. Clemson finishes tied with Wake Forest for 41st place with 4 points scored. There were 81 total men's teams with at least 1 athlete at this meet, 58 of those teams scored at least a point.

Unfortunately, there's a gap in the TV coverage, and I don't believe the livestream will resume until after the triple jump is over. I'll let y'all know if that changes. I will provide updates on the field series here though. And once again, here's the link to the live results:

Foreman is by far Clemson's highest ranked athlete in this competition, men's or women's. She enters the triple jump ranked 5th out of the 16, so this should be a great scoring opportunity for the Tigers. Shantae's season best, also her personal best, is 44 ft 10.75 in. She should be the best hope for the women's team to come away with a good score.

Shantae's first attempt is foul. She's very early in the order at number 3, and the number 2 athlete scratched, so that makes it even earlier. Therefore, I'll give placing updates at the end of each round.

Shantae's 2nd jump is 38 ft 9.50 in. That puts her in 11th place early in round 2. Not a great mark there, that'll put some pressure on the 3rd attempt. She'll need a significant improvement on that in order to qualify for the final.

The top 9 qualify for the final in this event. Shantae needs to get at least 43 ft 3 in on this attempt to get into the top 9 (for now.)

3/4 of an inch short. Shantae goes 43 ft 2.25 in on her 3rd attempt. That's not going to get it done, I'm afraid. I'll update just to make sure at the end of the round, but she won't qualify now unless I'm mistaken.

Shantae Foreman is going to finish 12th

The first 3 rounds are now complete, Shantae will not advance to the final. That one really stings. She was seeded 5th overall and was Clemson's highest ranked athlete entering the competition. That means Marie Forbes' 4 points from the weight throw will have to be all for the women in this meet.

team score update

Mar 9, 2024, 7:38 PM
Reply

The women have now fallen back into a 5-way tie for 32nd place. The men and the women had eerily similar scoring performances. Each team will finish with 4 total points, and in each case, all 4 of those points were scored by 1 person: Tarees Rhoden in the 800 meters for the men, Marie Forbes in the weight throw for the women. Nobody else scored for the Tigers in the entire meet.

Unfortunately, the women's place is only going to get worse as other teams continue to score in the remaining events while the Tigers will have no more scoring opportunities. Forbes' 4 points will have to be it for Clemson with Foreman unable to score in the triple jump.

The entire meet is now final and official with the conclusion of the women's 4x400m. The Clemson women finish in a 5-way tie for 38th place with Baylor, Florida State, Rice, and Virginia. The 5 teams each scored 4 points. Of the women's teams at this meet, 54 of them scored at least 1 point. There were 84 teams total who had at least 1 athlete in the competition.

I might write a lengthier synopsis later, but here's some brief thoughts on Clemson's performance from a team standpoint:

The men just didn't have the numbers to make much noise on the national scene this year as a team. They were very thin this year, even at the conference level. In spite of this, they did still manage a good finish at the ACC Championships, where they got 4th place with 81 points, only 1 point behind Virginia Tech in 3rd and just 3 points behind Florida State in 2nd. But this was mainly because the stars really carried the Tigers in that meet. Of the 81 points scored, 70 were scored by just 6 people, and 55 of the 81 points came from sprint and hurdle events. The Tigers' dominance in that event area (with some help from Lawrence, Cope, and Rhoden in throws and mid-distance) was enough to propel them to a strong finish this year in the ACC. But the SEC and the Big 12 have much better sprinters than the ACC, meaning that Clemson's reliance on those events to carry the team doesn't work well on the national level the way that it does within the ACC.

Additionally, the Tigers only had 5 men qualify for the meet, so scoring opportunities were very limited. Of those 5 qualifiers, none were ranked higher than 11th in their event entering the meet. Rhoden did well, but Rose, Anderson, Cope, and Lawrence, as good as they are, are just not likely to be good enough to score lots of points against elite national competition the way they can in conference. Therefore, asking 5 athletes all ranked in the bottom half of their events to carry a team to a good score was a tough assignment. The male Tigers really need to find some more help in some of the other event groups so that the sprinters and throwers don't have to do it all themselves. To their credit, the men's team did slightly outperform their ranking, as they entered the meet as the 45th ranked team in the nation and finished tied for 41st. I also believe they can still improve in outdoor, and I'm excited to see them get another shot at an ACC title.

This was a disappointing result for the women, who finished in a 5-way tie for 38th after coming in ranked 22nd in the country. It looked like a great start for them after Marie Forbes' performance in the weight throw. She finished 5th after being ranked 10th before the meet, picking up 4 big points early. But Oneka Wilson, Gladys Chepngetich, and Shantae Foreman all failed to score even a single point between them. When your 3 highest ranked athletes produce zero points, you're just not going to have much success, especially when you have only 5 women total in the meet. The stars didn't perform well for Clemson (with the exception of Forbes), and thus the Tigers' chances to live up to their ranking went up in smoke. Hopefully the women can rebound in outdoor.
