In-state recruiting and non-qualifiers

Jul 1, 2012, 12:25 PM

Thought I would open this topic up for discussion and see what y'all thought. Over the years, it seems like the vast majority of our non-qualifiers or partial qualifiers have come from in-state high schools, going back to the days of Tymere Zimmerman. It's no secret that the public schools of South Carolina aren't doing too well. I'm sure Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and N.C. all have their fair share of non-qualifiers as well. Is this just a systemic problem with the public schools in the South, or is there anything Clemson can do to make sure the guys who are committed to us get it done in the classroom?

The problems started way before they become Clemson commits or even before they start playing high school football.I'm sure once they get to high school they might even be allowed to float by some, making the problem worse. The educational problems in SC go way deeper than a few talented young men that can't play D1 football. THere was a good article in the Post and Courier several years ago (Ken Burger), titled something like "Why Johnny can't play football".It is extreamly sad given the opportunities available to kids now that so few of them take advantage of educational opportunities because they all think that they will be the next big tine sports hero.So they skip a chance at a free post-secondary education to chase a dream that will never come true.

Poor public schools are not isolated to just the south

The problem is country wide.

Yeah, blame it on the insurance industry!!

Another factor in this too is the Acedemic review board.

that was a big deal a few years ago. and it was during this time that Dabo really secured his job as a head coach in fighting for the football vs academics and impressed both sides. Anyway part of the whole academic review process from my understanding is being willing to take risks on SC kids in order to at least in part fulfill its mission of educating south carolinians.
