Also I know the US is not elite but every year we are ranked low going into a World Cup and 3 of the last 4 years we have made it out of group stage and been one of the last 16 standing.

Obviously it is difficult to accurately compare CFB teams with International Soccer teams, though, I'm not upset about the France comparison.
France has a tremendous and consistent history in the sport. France is that sleeper team, because it has young world class talent and depth.
