They'd make the home team take timeouts if the QB complained enough. That was always so effective, as it only made us get louder.

The balloon release game against Maryland when Boomer was their QB. Flag was thrown on the fans because we were too loud.

Virginia Tech - they named this the "Dooley Rule"
Aug 23, 2013, 7:17 PM
|
|
after VT's coach Bill Dooley
http://www.goupstate.com/article/19921031/NEWS/210310305
"The thing I remember the most about going against Clemson was when we played down there at Death Valley (when he was with Virginia Tech in 1980) and it led to college football putting in a new rule on crowd noise," Dooley said. "Every time we went under center the Clemson people would roar. It was very disconcerting. So they put in a rule after that. Some people called it the `Bill Dooley rule."'

held his hands up to his ears.....this went on and on.....then they would make a PA announcement telling us to be quiet or there would be a penalty.....then there would be a 5 yard delay of game penalty.....then the entire crowd would go "SHHHHHHHHHHHH" which was nearly as distracting as the yelling.

And thennnnnnnnnnnn, when we hit Duke with the first ever

"Quiet Out", where LJ was 99% quiet during the entire warm up period, shoot around, etc. All the way through the introduction of DUKE's starting Five the crowd was dead silent. I mean you could literally have heard a pin drop. Then, the announcer said, and starting for the Clemson Tigers and pandemonium broke out!!!!!
Shortly thereafter, the ACC instituted a rule where you had to alternate the introduction of players.......one for them, one for you, and so on.
Clemson was too loud for'em, and then Clemson was to quiet for'em. I kid you not!

In my lifetime, the loudest game I remember is...

2005 Triple Overtime vs Miami. I think Miami was ranked fairly high. Late in the 4th, we needed a big stop to get the ball back. Death Valley went absolutely crazy. My friends from Columbia were in the middle of lot 5 and said the noise was insane out there.

1984 against Merryland, Boomers last game and they were ACC champs cause we were on probation. We got several noise penalties and then it went silent. Never seen it since. Crowd was quiet and everyone waved their arms. It was wild. The stadium looked like it was a wave. We whooped them that day. Great memory.

VTech was the game that led to the penalty. That was 1982 I believe. Crazy day. I had my buddy from VPI at the game and it was fantastic. Youtube didn't exist then, so you may be referring to Miami on the early mid 2000's.

Clemson often got warnings for crowd noise in DV in the 70s
Aug 23, 2013, 11:37 PM
|
|
In fact, I remember after one such warning, the crowd pretended to clap and cheer (without making any noise). It was a CRAZY sight to behold. I was like watching a movie with the sound off.
