Will UGA be allowed to call in fake injuries again?
Aug 28, 2014, 12:51 PM

Last year UGA feigned injury several times in order to slow down our offense. Has anything been done from an officiating standpoint to penalize this kind of thing or can we expect more of the same?

It's impossible to regulate

if a kid is actually hurt, the refs are responsible for his safety. A ref cannot make a judgement on who is faking. But it's just poor sportsmanship on that coaching staff and the whole world will notice.

Easy to regulate

Just add a rule that says that when they have to stop the game for an injury the player has to sit out for the rest of that drive. Since Saban cares so much about player safety, he should be on board.

if you lose your helmet rule you have to sit out the next play, Auburn went straight for Tajh's helmet even after plays.

More of the same...and read somewhere that apparently the refs are going to take their sweet time spotting the ball this year to try to "negate" some of the advantage.

Once a player is tired...

a two minute rest won't fix him. Actually, they take that little break to give their coaches a chance to pick out a play. They never fine tune a playcall or make any real adjustments.
I've noticed we seem to come out on top. I think our coaches fine tune and continue the game plan so it doesn't bother me as it once did.

But as the sister of an official, refs will always err on the side of caution. If a player goes down for any reason, faked or not, they will stop play.

I agree that it could definitely be abused. Yes I am a dawg fan and no I am not saying what happened one way or the other. However, players that are injured during the course of a game get up and attempt to go all the time just to find out they are worse off than they originally thought. With the up tempo pace that Clemson and many other school's utilize, it would have made much more sense to stay down initially and then analyze what to do from that point on. Which in the cases you are describing, it is a strong possibility that this actually occured after the fact due to another team mate concerned about their safety told them to lay down rather than get up and try to go. I know many people can call bs or w/e and I am not saying that the injury was not faked. I am just saying that for a team that does not face up tempo teams very frequently, they do not know how to respond right away. (it provides no unfair advantage from a planning stand point) ... For example, if a Clemson player goes down with an injury, they are used to the pace and know they wont have time to get to the sideline or figure things out at their game speed. So in turn, they stay down and get checked or walked to the sideline.
P.S.- This is just an objective opinion. I do not claim to know whether the players were injured or not. It could easily go either way.

Well thought out opinion, but when

there's video footage of the GA defense looking to the sideline for a play, then turning to one guy and pushing down on his shoulder to indicate that he should go to the ground, then that same player immediately starts pointing to his "fallen" teammate, it doesn't take much to connect the dots on if it was a fake injury or not.
As one poster said above, and as it's been pointed out before, an easy way to fix this would be to implement a rule stating that if a player has to leave the field due to injury and the game is stopped because of it, that player has to stay out for the remainder of that drive

Interesting concept, but from the officials stand point, they are taught to comsider the players physical well being.
Trust me, they are well aware of the "fake" scenerio, but their hands are tied in that situation. If they don't stop play, they (the officiating crew) might very well be downgraded for not calling it.
It happened several time last year with the new targeting rule

That video footage didn't capure the interaction beforehand. It is a clip of the after effect. The player in question that was "pushing down on his shoulder" already knew about the injury per sources close to the situation. Once he noticed the play was going to begin with a fellow athlete injured in the middle of the field, he supposedly turned to tell him to sit down. Otherwise, play begins and he risks further injury. Again, just sharing an opinion from an alternate view point. I have nothing wrong with the suggestion to then pull them from that drive, or at least that set of downs.

It will be intersting to.see how an SEC officiating crew will handle it. An ACC crew called our game last year.

Not in this series....Brad Allen's crew from the ACC called our game last year. I'll be happy to find out which crew will be calling our game Saturday...but it will be an SEC crew.
