In 1887 Alexander Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinburgh, had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2,000 years prior:
A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. The days are long and arduous here on the front of these message boards. We know the Vegan Snowflakes to be a fragile lot, melting at the first sight of a 100% American hamburder. But none of us could comprehend their sheer volume of commentary, and dank memes.
