New(er) mid-sized pickups. What you got?

It seems to be perennial sales champion Tacoma vs the field. The field being Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon, Nissan Frontier far as I can tell. I'm in the market. Would appreciate feedback from any who own these trucks. Looking at a smaller crew cab 4x4 to replace my big ole F-150.

If you care about resale value, Tacoma is the no-brainer. I bought one for my rising CU senior when he was in high school. Solid, versatile truck.

I have a 2009 Frontier. Excellent truck but turn radius is terrible. Supposed to be improved now!

Same color I'm looking at. Just not sure which trim yet (TRD Pro, Limited, etc). Just curious what other brand owners had to say. Certainly leaning to the Tacoma right now. Thanks.

And I am going with the TRD Off Road. The PRO looks awesome but the Off Road has the same mechanical features (locking rear differential and crawl control) as the Pro. I can't justify the 8k price difference in between the two for the cosmetics that the PRO has. Outside of cosmetic upgrades, the only difference is the fox shocks and TRD catback exhaust and intake - that stuff could be had on the open market for far less than what Toyota is up charging. Either way, they are great trucks and I can't wait to get mine! I'm getting rid of 2012 Silverado for it and I am excited.

Went from a 2500 Chevy to a F150 Ecoboost. Love it, towes my 9000 pound camper with ease. Faster than a Tacoma and better gas mileage,

I bought a 2016 Tacoma. I have gotten more comments on this truck than all the other vehicles I have owned combined. You can not beat the resale value with any type vehicle. Mine is a 4x4 loaded out. The new beige color.

GMC Canyon is where I would go, I still have the GMC Canyon I bought new in 2004, it has 200 thousand plus miles and still runs really well, no major problems. I've changed things that naturally wear out like front rotors and brakes, but nothing major. I've used AMSOIL since about 40 K miles, and it seems to still have all it's power. Note, I've always kept up with the usual maintenance, and that is the life with most!!!

Why mid size? Why not buy a truck. If you want a half truck get a mid sized suv on a car frame. Full size trucks get nearly same gas mileage now, more power, more tow power and don’t look silly. No reason anymore to get half of a truck. Why they quit making el camino’s.....

...and an F-150 (rarely used) with this smaller pickup that will actually fit in my garage and become my daily driver. I hardly ever tow, and "off road" honestly consists of dirt roads to get to a rifle range. But we do need a truck for the occasional truck stuff. So I think this size truck is what we need. Plus the wife isn't comfortable driving the big F-150.

In all seriousness over looking my other comments. I just drove the all the midsize trucks on the market this past winter to add to the work fleet. And went with Tacoma, hands down.
Turn radius, inside set up, ride was smoother, warranty, ratings, towing, everything was above the rest for the price. Not to mention resale value.
We have 2 Silverados, 1 Sierra, 1 ram, and a f150, and the Tacoma was the only mid size I felt comfortable in to move down. I drive a 2016 Silverado myself.
First truck taken everyday.
One complaint the bed is small, but it was similar to all the mid sizes so can’t knock it for that

The 2004 GMC Canyon 5 cylinder engine has 220 hp, and the Chevy 5.0 V/8 only had 190 hp, so at the time, the 5 cylinder was the better choice. The following year, the 2005 5 cylinder actually came with 240 hp... With my GMC Canyon is the off road with the Z71 suspension package, I can hook up to a dual axle fully enclose utility beaver tail trailer with two full size Harley's and camping equipment headed to Daytona Bike week, set the cruise on 80 mph, and it holds it there with no strain between Cootlumbia and Daytona. I would suggest that anyone getting the mid size pickup, get the ones with the heavy duty suspension over the standard size.

I am presently test driving a Chevy Colorado that I will probably buy Monday. I own a Nissan Frontier and the above poster is 100% accurate. The turning radius is the worst I have ever seen. I need a smaller truck for maneuvering in tight wooded areas. I needed a football field to turn that Frontier around.

Yup, I have no complaints on my 2018 F-150 Super Crew . I went with the 2.7 Ecoboost and 10 speed auto. Absolutely cavernous inside, rides darn good, comfortable, tows the 2 jetski’s very well and delivers 21-22 in town MPG.

I’d look at a cat eye Chevy/GMC. You’ll still find some in perfect condition and they aren’t as big as the new body style but look and deliver much more than a Tacoma or Colorado. I’ve had my ‘04 Silverado for 3 years and it’s great

Based on what you've stated your needs are you should get a midsize suv and rent a truck from HD the few times a year you need a truck. On a personal note, back in early Spring I test drove a 2018 Tacoma and it felt weak as hell. My neighbor who has an 09 rode along and said, "#### what in the hell did they do to this engine?" I tried out the Tundra and fell in love with it.

If you are looking for something smaller, I the GMC Canyon now comes with a 2.8 duramax diesel. 7,700 lb towing capacity and 30+mpg on the Hwy. Not bad for a smaller truck...and you can still get a crew cab.

I got two F-250’s one is crew cab and one is 4x4. The diesel ones get great gas mileage and will last forever as will the value. If you buy one that is a year or two old you will save 20k and it will hold its value for a long while if maintained properly you could get 500-800k miles on it.

I researched the entire southeast for 1-2 years, and ended up purchasing a new 2016 Nissan Frontier SL crew cab 2 years ago. It only has 15K miles on it now, but so far, I love the truck. It has responded extremely well with no real problems. It has options on it (like heated leather seats, moon-roof, Sirius XM, PS, PL, FOB, sliding rear window, etc) that would have required me to upgrade to the maximum levels for Canyon, Colorado, Tacoma, etc and cost $7,000 - 15,000 more.
The ONLY negative I have is that I preferred a 6' bed, but I chose a 2-wheel drive, and the 6' required the 4-wheel drive option to get that. The packages did not allow exactly what I wanted. But in reality, neither did any of the other trucks.
Be aware that, unless Nissan has changed the engine, the V6 is long in the tooth (I think since 2005) and does not have the recent engine upgrades like Toyota, GM, GMC have. I consider the Nissan engine to be almost bulletproof at this stage of its' life.
If you don't mind spending a ton of money, maybe choose Toyota or GM or GMC.
Good luck.

We have had a GMC Canyon and a Tacoma. We traded in the GMC when it was time for the Tacoma because Chevy didn't make canyons or colorados at that time. My husband likes the Tacoma better. I like it better too I think. We have a 2018 Tacoma.

I still drive 2002 4 x 4 with 170k miles have basically done only routine maintenance. I also pulled out a stick 2 wheel drive f150 once at a boat ramp. If that’s the size you want it’s worth every penny. I can’t vouch they are true offers but I. Can tell you I frequently have people come up to me and say they would like to buy it (no for sale sign)

Congrats! Can't go wrong with Toyota. Wish they sold the Toyota Hilux in US but they are too reliable and well built. The US is one of few countries people switch cars every 3-5yrs so Toyota would loose money.
My only problem with Tacoma is once I went to a larger truck I couldn't go small again. But I am pulling boats quite often. Most reliable vehicle I ever owned was a 4runner.
