Question for all you South Carolinians
Sep 9, 2015, 12:19 PM
|
|
Do you identify the Panthers as a North Carolina, South Carolina, Charlotte, or two-state team?
I made a comment to a Charlotte resident (Charlatan?) yesterday calling them the Charlotte Panthers and you'd have thought I just took a whiz on his granddads grave with the angry diatribe I received for a full 15 minutes afterwards.

North Carolina. But it should be Charlotte. It's silly that they didn't opt to go with the city, like all other NFL teams. (Exception: Redskins) But either way, I don't consider them affiliated with South Carolina at all.

You seem to have forgotten that the Pittsburgh Panthers have won the national college football championship as well.
Also, Ty Detmer won the Heisman Trophy as a Brigham Young Cougar.

With my interactions it appears that more people from different parts of NC relate well to the Panthers, in SC I think it is more evenly split between several teams, but as they stick around longer there may be a growing contingent of SC's that have grown up with them. When I was young and there were no Panthers I remember the Redskins being a popular team here...I guess there were some Falcons fans as well.

Many residents of border communities in S.C. now identify with the Panthers. Jerry Richardson went Wofford and thus their training camp is held in Spartanburg every year. The longer the team is involved in S.C. the more fans will see the team as relevant.
Go Tigers!

I don't know what this guy is talking about but there are a lot of panther fans in sc. They are referred to as the Carolina Panthers, as in a shared team. Charlotte location is an easy drive from most places.
I think most of the people here that aren't panther fans are either; people who were watching ball before the Panthers were around or family influences.

No, there aren't a lot.
There aren't as many Panthers fans as there are fans of either Clemson or South Carolina. Not even close.

The whole Carolina thing was mainly a marketing move to convince the league and fans that the region should support them.

If you look at the history of the organization you will see that it was specifically titled CAROLINA to represent both states. For all you out there that say Charlotte...Remember where they played their inaugural season? That's right DEATH VALLEY.

Dabo state a few years ago that Carolina was North Carolina and USC was in California. USuC is in Columbia. So I associate them with North Carolina. Just like the real Carolina team the Tarholes. Go Tigers.

For my entire lifetime (which goes way, way back the big game in this state has always been called the "Carolina-Clemson" game.
While no fan of the gamecocks, I grew up calling that other school in Columbia "Carolina" and I still do. However, I draw the line at calling them USC ... they are SCAR while USC is indeed in Southern California.
The "Tar Heels" were and will always remain, not "Carolina", but "North Carolina" to me.

I view them as a Charlotte team but I still pull for them. Not even close to the level of a fan of Clemson but I like to see them win is a good way of wording it. I wouldn't say there are a lot of panthers fans in SC but probably more in the upstate area than any where else. I work with several panthers fans and know several more. But I don't know any die-hard fans like Clemson or Sakerlina fans. But this is the south, college football rules down here, and the panthers are still a relatively young organization compared to most nfl teams.

the Panthers. I have always identified the Panthers as a "two state" team. They played half of their opening season in Death Valley for crying out loud. I am from Spartanburg and went to training camp every single year at Wofford growing up. Jerry Richardson is a Spartanburg guy and wanted to make sure that the Panthers were included in both states.
The Charlotte metro location serves best for their home stadium because its close to South Carolina and is a really cool town for a professional sports team.
I like that the Panthers are a two state team and I like rooting for them.

I live in Lake Wylie, SC. 20 minutes from Bank of America. I've dispised the Panthers my entire life and I never even really liked the NFL lol. Not sure why I dislike them so much. But a lot of my friends growing up liked them, I guess because we live on the NC/SC line. They're a NC team to me. I don't want my state to claim them
