Swinney takes different Monday game-week approach
Nov 28, 2022, 8:20 PM
|
|
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney says on his call-in show that he took a different approach to putting the previous game away, the 31-30 loss to South Carolina, before facing UNC in the ACC Championship this week.
"We didn't play smart. Just didn't do what we needed to do win. You have to deserve to win and we didn't. It hurts, but you've got to move on. We're all on the same page. I did something today I don't usually do. We don't usually lose a lot, but today was a day we all watched it together. Everybody in there. So the offense had to watch the defense and the defense had to watch the offense and everybody had to watch the special teams. Went through all the plays so that everybody could be on the same page so we could flush it, bounce back and move forward. We've got a great opportunity this week. It's always about what's next. Whether you're 12-0 or 10-2, it doesn't matter. You've got to win this game...We have two goals left, and if we hit both goals, we're going to have a great year...(If the goals are hit), we've had a heck of a year..."
On the first question, about DJ Uiagalelei and if he'll start Saturday, Swinney gave a succinct answer:
"DJ will start the game, and that's where we'll start at."

I wonder if all the defensive players are getting a look at DJ’s performance and thinking “###” now that they’re actually watching the tape for the offense.

Sounds like he’s trending. He has to hold the team together through the bowl and early signing…then can lay the hammer.

A 10-2 or 12-2 season is not a failure. A disappointment, yes, but not a failure.

10-2 in the ACC is not the same. This team would be 6-6 in the SEC!

Come on now. I would put us at 8-4 maybe 9-3 in the SEC this year. Do we drop another game or 2. I think so. But not 6-6.

and tell us how we would've been 6-6 playing that! They played one team that's better than who we played...UGA! Tenn was overrated...probably equal to FSU!

You sir are a spoiled brat and an idiot. You may need to find a more successful program to pull for to satisfy your sense of entitlement.

its playoffs or bust..its not entitlement or being spoiled..its called a bar was set and most look to either reach the bar or cross it every season..losing to our rivals was just the icing on the cake to the bust of a season

You guys that are so adamant that this season is a total failure, I assume you are CEO of a Fortune 500 company, or your All American days are over so you can now hold these coaches and college kids up to your standard. You are obviously perfect and expect the same from everyone else. SMH. I must have missed your glory days.

Dabo is starting to see tha' light ( I HOPE !!!!) -- doing something different is a start for a change --hold the entire team accountable for the loss -- feel sure he made all the coaches watch together too, with the team -- maybe this is a start to the changes, that have to be made -- come Saturday,if DJ is in the same slump ( and I think he will be ) will we make a change ?? before we loose the game ????
DJ is not an ""Option QB"" and never will be -- just to much thinking goes into decision making and there is very little time to make those decisions -- not just slinging the football

This legitimately sounds to me like Dabo is trying to show the team why he is not going to roll DJ out there next year just bc he's the upper classman, he's bracing them for DJ getting yanked if he plays like crap again. This is the message "Do your job and operate within the scheme, noone is garaunteed anything". Im sure he will start with some of the guys on Defense not getting a start this weekend. This leads me to believe losing the locker room may have been the biggest deal Dabo was trying to avoid by starting DJ.

I think most think he should have at least given Cade a chance in trying to beat our biggest rival. Saying nothing is guaranteed really means nothing, when the only starting position was guaranteed, regardless of performance or lack thereof.

He does not want to lose the locker room if he makes the qb switch. I really like that they all watched the game together. This allows the good, the bad, and the ugly to be highlighted.

Uh, if the defense watched the offense and the offense...

watched the defense there was probably a puke-off. That's a joke.
Coaching is all about relationships because coaches never want to see another coach axed. However, winning saves all jobs. Maybe (or definitely) Dabo should not have promoted from within basically turning the keys to the Ferrari over to 15 yo first-time driver or freshly unwrapped coordinators.
To keep things within his coaching tree.
1) Try to hire Scott as Co-coordinator (Streeter has to know he needs help). 2) Wide receivers back to Scott 3) Grisham moves off field and manage the transfer portal (Is Pearman even showing up at the office for that job?)
On defense...feed Wes G. some gunpowder (he's needs to be meaner and blitz more).
Oh yeah, let Klubnik play a series each half. If he heats up, he stays in.
There, I fixed it. I hope Dabo reads this soon.

Maybe the players will have an epiphany, see that DJ is a boat anchor, and reverse course by demanding that Dabo give Cade a try. I believe the players may in some way be responsible for DJ being our starting QB.
There are rumors out there that the players willl only play for DJ.

Well apparently Dabo was not paying attention when the team was watching the replay of the game…..at least not when the offense and DJ was out there…..because if he did and was being honest with us when asked the question about DJ starting against NC he would have said “Is DJ starting?…He!! no ….did you even pay attention what was going on out there…..DJ was horrible out there and no….He ain’t starting this one”….period!

I am truly surprised. I thought that it would be SOP for the team to review every game they played. Watch it, analyze it, critique it, and work on improvements.

I think they normally do it in groups and concentrate on the film of their group, maybe just for time management if nothing else. Sounds like this time watching it all together would be the difference.
