I thought a lot of OP and was very upset when he left. He was a fine coach and was great in player development with basketball and their schoolwork too.

Purnell put Clemson into a gimmick system of press ball that related into demoralizing defeats against any team that knew how to inbound the ball. I believe he recruited better Bigs, but he made Clemson a consistent first round flop.
He was the Tommy Bowden of basketball.

Tigers to successful new Year. I have a feeling that if they do continue to get better, then we have a chance to get Zion, which will completely change Tiger BB just as the signing of Spiller really helped changed fb.

Even he is one and done, he will bring more attention to the program than any other player has. I see no downside in having a one and done player of this caliber. He'll be that regardless of where he goes, so why not take advantage of it?

been thus far, no doubt. But we have to be careful not to use the Purnell era as some kind of end-goal, or as an example of just what Clemson basketball can be. We have to aim much higher than that.

Purnell plateaued, then Brownell took over, almost immediately took us down a notch, then plateaued there. Really, really hoping he gets it turned around this season. We seem to have more pieces in place than we've had since Brownell's first season.

Loved Demontez Stitt, Trevor Booker, Sam Mays, Cliff Hammonds, KC Rivers and Terrance Oglesby. And somehow OP never showed any inclination to ever set a screen for cocky bomber Oglesby who was one of the all-time best Clemson long-range shooters even in his short time on the team. Then he lost Oglesby (to a Scandinavian pro team), lost the team and lost the fans over the next two years. Still unsure what happened ... though it was evident OP was not a tournament coach.

had plateaued under his leadership. I really liked OP, and think he did a great job. Purnell's style was basically a work-around, a way to get the absolute most out of what he had in the absence of much real basketball talent; a concession that the program would never attract elite players or be a serious, consistent contender in our own conference without a major overhaul and a new mindset by the university.

Still, Purnell was not recruiting at a high enough level to compete year-in-year-out in the ACC.

“But it was clear the program had plateaued under his leadership”
I think this statement kind of just caught on without any real thought behind it. His last recruiting class was his best and our program had become a perennial tournament team. The man played for an ACC championship for gosh sakes. The wins in the NCAA tournament would have come.
His style was perfect for our basketball program and following up his departure by hiring Brownell would be like following up Dabo with Paul Johnson.
Said it 7 years ago and I’ll keep saying it....

It didn't just catch on with me. That was my opinion when

he left, and there was plenty of thought behind it. With OP's teams, everything was dependent upon the success of our full-court press. Toward the end, teams were figuring it out and defeating it with relative ease. We really depended on getting points off of that press, and our half-court offense was disjointed at best, and almost non-existent; it was greatly improved the next year under Brownell.
It has always been my opinion that OP maxed out at Clemson, and got out while the getting was good. I liked him, and he did a great job at Clemson. It was simply a struggle to get the kind of players he needed to move to the next level, which would have meant moving past the first round of NCAA tournament. He had an opportunity to get paid well and took it. Then Brownell came in, did a great job coaching up the team he inherited, but then couldn't recruit a lick.

We lost those tournament games because of missed free throws. Had nothing to do with his style of play but rather just a bit of misfortune at the wrong time.

could NEVER shoot free throws, at least most of them! And I remember seeing a stat one time about his press. 40% of the time that a team beat his press, they scored on an easy layup or dunk!

His style of play wasn't full proof but it allowed us to attract better athletes and gave us an edge which is exactly what a football school like Clemson needs to compete in a basketball conference.

Two things...OP recruited long athletic types first

(as opposed to good shooters and those with basketball skills) because that was what he needed to run his press, which was what he had to run because he couldn't get the shooters and basketball players. Secondly, his press had his players so worn out it affected their free throw shooting, particularly late in games.

This is always a funny topic because
Dec 16, 2017, 1:52 PM
|
|
the people who hated Purnell always site the fact that he never won in the first round of the tournament as a big reason why they hated him. Now we never make the tournament, and it seems like the people who prefer Brownell over Purnell, view this as a good thing. Since we won't lose in the first round. I wish we were still playing significant basketball and hated seeing Purnell leave, but I understand why he did. In the end the move did not work out for him or us.

If you look at the numbers... OP had a tougher SOS almost every year than what B.B. has had... and still managed to make the tournament 3 yrs in a row... AND win more ACC games than anyone not named Duke or UNC over that time.
