Could our passing game take a step back this year?

Jul 26, 2013, 11:35 AM

At least early on?

We lost 167(52%) catches for 2,555(61%) yards and 29(72% of receiving tds) touchdowns with guys graduating, leaving early, or out for the upcoming season due to injury.

With the lack of depth at the position group and the possibility of early departures after this season, the incoming freshmen should all avoid redshirts.

The loss of Jaron Brown and Brandon Ford are what concern me the most at this juncture. We'll see if the young guns at TE and WR step it up.

I can't count the number of times those two saved our azzes last year on critical 3rd downs.

their blocking will surely be missed as well. Cant even recall the number of times Ford sprung Boyd on a roll-out to pick up a first down on the ground.

those number aren't 100% lost. If Hopkins wasn't here last year. Someone else would have got a percentage of those touchdowns.

I don't think so. Losing what was possibly the best WR

Jul 26, 2013, 11:47 AM

in the history of the program has got to hurt, but I think we are in the very unusual position of being so loaded at WR that there will be very little, if any drop off.

We have plenty of talent and depth at WR and we have the potential at TE to be just as good at catching the ball this year as last.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Do we really have a lot of depth at receiver?

Jul 26, 2013, 11:59 AM

Our second+ string is all freshmen and even with that, we only have enough bodies to be 2 deep.

2025 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We are loaded at WR

Jul 26, 2013, 12:10 PM

We have 4 experienced receivers

Sammy - 5*
Bryant - 4*
Peake - 4*
Humphries - 3*

Then you add

Williams - 4*

the inclusion of Matt Porter in the 2 deep is more a sign of a lack of depth than proof of it.

Martavis Bryant needs to be on the field more than playing second team behind Watkins will provide. I would think Watkins may have to play more in the slot to accomplish that.

Agree with almost all your posts but I think "proven TE",

tho true, won't be an issue. I wish Coop was around for the short yardage plays, but I think we'll see some great plays out of the TE position.

Who do you see making plays at TE? Leggett looked good

Jul 26, 2013, 12:37 PM

in the spring game, but maybe that was in part due to our lack of bodies in the secondary in the spring game. He and Seckinger don't seem to have the size to be effective blockers yet.

2025 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Both have put on good weight. Leggett will probably be at

Jul 26, 2013, 12:50 PM

240-45 range, Seckinger at 230-35. It's more a matter of learning the O and from the coaches, Leggett being an early enrollee has helped. Seckinger and McCullough should already know it. Leggett is a 'long' 6'-6" and Seckinger is a 'long' 6'-4". The blocking questions may be legit but I think they'll more than make up for it receiving.

Right now, it looks like first string will be Watkins,

Jul 26, 2013, 12:15 PM [ in reply to Do we really have a lot of depth at receiver? ]

Peake, and Humphries. Tons of talent and experience there - no problem.

Second string: Bryant, Porter, and Hopper. Bryant, we all know, has almost unlimited potential, and has significant experience. Porter is a legitimate question mark as a regular contributor, but has been in the program for a while and should be solid as a back-up. Hopper, again a legitimate question mark, but I don't think there is any question about his talent and potential either; he could be a great one.

We are hearing that at least one of the freshman WRs is expected to play, and that's not a bad thing.

So yes, some experience concerns once you get past our top 4 receivers, not much concern though when it comes to talent. Barring injuries, we should be in great shape this year.

Hoping Humphries can improve his yards after catch.

Jul 26, 2013, 12:29 PM [ in reply to Right now, it looks like first string will be Watkins, ]

He only had 280 yards on 40 catches last year. That's a lot of catches for not too many yards.

That may have as much to do with how he was used and what

he was told to do as it did with his ability. I would expect that to improve with a more prominent role this year.

Re: Could our passing game take a step back this year?

Jul 26, 2013, 11:58 AM

Don't think all the freshman will avoid redshirt. We don't have a lack of depth at all. We have 4 proven receivers in Watkins, Peake, Bryant, and Humphries. Hopper would have avoided redshirt last season if it wasn't for depth. That leaves one spot in the 2 deep available at WR. When you build this kind of depth players don't get the opportunity to shine until a few years in the system. I would not be surprised to see an every better passing game with Boyd's continued improvement.

Nope, if anything it is more explosive

Here is how the depth chart shifts

Outside - Nuk - Sammy
Slot - Sammy - Humphries / Hopper
Outside - Brown - Peake

To replace the T.E. you will see a bunch of 4 WR sets

Ford was a veteran te. Ellington was an extremely respected Rb as well. I just don't see how we could be as good. I think we will still be very good offensively though. I'm also concerned with the OL. Tajh nearly died against lsu and scar.

Hopkins, Ellington, Brown, and Ford are gone.

Jul 26, 2013, 12:39 PM

Ellington was not as good as a reciever as Spiller was when he was the RB, but he was still a big part of the passing gmae when it came to blocking. Ford was not quite as good as Dwayne Allen, but he did make a lot of clutch cathces, as well as Jaron Brown. Brown seemed to ###### a lot of overthrown balls out of the air. I'm not even going to mention #9 DP Hopkins. Yes Clemson is losing a lot of recievers. We got a lot of talent to back em up, but will they be ready?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree that the blocking from the RB position will be

Jul 26, 2013, 12:48 PM

a big question mark with Ellington gone. Hopefully Hot Rod studied/is studying a lot of film of this part of Ellington's game because last year there were a bunch of times that he kept plays alive for Tajh that he would've never gotten to complete due to picking up a blitzer.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I just don't see it happening

Jul 26, 2013, 12:39 PM

Not with almost our whole oline returning. An all American QB and all the talent we have at WR. If one of our RBs steps up and can give us some good carries. I'm. Not sure if anybody can stop our offense let alone our WR.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm concerned about losing 3rd down Brown

Jul 26, 2013, 12:45 PM

He was always pretty clutch for us.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You now have 3 # 1's in their Prime...

Jul 26, 2013, 12:52 PM

Sammy was rated as some as the No. 1 WR
Martavius was rated as No. 1 WR
Charone was rated as No. 1 WR

This should be their best season for all, I would say we could take a substantial leap forward this year.

Re: Could our passing game take a step back this year?

Jul 26, 2013, 1:18 PM

I know how valuable Sammy is but IMHO Nuk will be a huge loss,,someone else just must step up and make defs play them also instead of just Sammy.. if this threat develops (Peak,Bryant,Williams, Hopper) to go with STEADY Humphries that will cover for loss of Nuk

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I mostly agree with you

Jul 26, 2013, 11:44 PM

Nuk will def be a big loss. He had a better understanding of how to create separation between him and a defender. However, Sammy has tremendous speed and knows how to use it. He's not all jets all the time. He understands that he can bait people with one gear and then kick it into another gear to get open. It'll be interesting to see how he responds to FSU's more press oriented D, but I think Sammy will have more than his fair share of catches and YACs.

What I want to see is someone to step up and take the place of Jaron "3rd down" Brown. There's a reason why he got that nickname. When it was 3rd and long you pretty much knew that he'd understand where the sticks are as well as make the catch in traffic. We'll need that type of clutch receiver. I think it'll be Humpfries (sp?). He reminds me a lot of Grisham. Not because he's white, but because of the catches he can make fearlessly in traffic as well as manage to get some decent yards after the catch. GHop should be interesting and I hope that Peake finally peaks (sorry, couldn't resist). We need those guys to become a threat so teams won't key in solely on Sammy. TE will also be crucial. That's been a vital release valve for Boyd when he's under pressure.

We got 100% of the delivery system back.....***

Re: Could our passing game take a step back this year?

Jul 27, 2013, 2:12 AM

Relax Mahn. Seriously we'll be alright. Sammy will have a great year. Charone Peake will finally get more tosses his way. Martavis Bryant didn't see much last year but he made the best of what he got. Look for him to get more long ball touches this year; with Watkins being perhaps the biggest decoy in CFB.

Then theres Adam Humphries. Hes like our Wes Welker but perhaps more effective due to our offense. And TE Jordan Leggett also steps in to add some explosiveness. Don't be surprised if he sets a few records in his career for his position.

Not to be overlooked is Jerome Hopper. Kid is a stud in the making from what I've heard. He'll be great following up in the slot pos. And folks forget about big Mike Williams. Had a great HS career and the sky could be the limit for him. Hes got size at 6'5 220 and reminds me of Rod Gardner.

We'll be just fine my friend. I'm not even gonna tout the 2014 class because we're fine with what we have this season. And we're only loading up beyond that.
