Relative to 7.6% of college football teams that could use the portal and did in 2024 that made it to their conference championship game.

That’s bogus when 4/134 were the only ones that didn’t. That’s means anyone not a service academy or Clemson made their conference championship.

Here’s a bigger stat: 100% of the playoff teams since 2020 have used the portal. In fact, upwards of 15+% of their starters came from the portal. Those with 0%, no CFP or championships. #believable

Re: 100% of college football teams that could use the portal but didnt in 2024

Dec 3, 2024, 5:09 PM

I’m not sure what is bogus. 131 of 134 FBS schools could use the portal (minus service academies). 130 of those 131 did use the portal in 2024. 10 of those 130 are playing for a conference championship this weekend equating to approximately 7.6%.

It's an Appeal to Outliers

1

Dec 3, 2024, 5:22 PM

Logical fallacies are 100% bogus.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: It's an Appeal to Outliers

1

Dec 3, 2024, 5:37 PM

Logic requires an argument using premises to justify a conclusion. My statement only provides factual univariate statistics.

Now if I said “The transfer portal is useless. Only 7.6% of FBS schools that could and did use it made their conference championship games”, then you can claim it as a fallacy.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Bogus.

1

Dec 3, 2024, 6:12 PM

You're trying to claim a univariate statistic in a multivariate situation.

That's the poster boy for "outlier".

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Bogus.

1

Dec 3, 2024, 6:43 PM

Sure, it is multivariate in the sense that conditioned on the 130 teams that did use the portal and could out of 134 teams, only 10 made their conference championships. Claiming it as bogus is odd since it is a statistic no different than saying that Clemson’s home winning percentage this year is 71.4%.

As for being an outlier, you need a distribution. What distribution are you assuming?

Illogic includes taking a single data point

1

Dec 3, 2024, 6:47 PM [ in reply to Re: It's an Appeal to Outliers ]

Then claiming that 100% of it is valid in a multivariate setting. That's EXACTLY what the original thread starter did.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Illogic includes taking a single data point

1

Dec 3, 2024, 7:05 PM

Apologies if I am slow, but I’m trying to understand what you are saying. To my knowledge, for logic to exist, you must make a claim leading to a conclusion. This is just a conditioned statistic. While the original post from FM is biased given the sample size of schools that met the conditions is 1, it is only a funny statistic that made no claims for a conclusion based on the statistic.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I dont think you know the definition of logical fallacy

2

Dec 3, 2024, 5:39 PM [ in reply to It's an Appeal to Outliers ]

“A logical fallacy is an error in reasoning that uses irrelevant points or invalid arguments without evidence to support them”

Both relevant points and valid arguments were used.

Appeal to Outliers are not valid.

1

Dec 3, 2024, 6:14 PM [ in reply to I dont think you know the definition of logical fallacy ]

Ergo, neither is your argument.

Clemson is the only school that can use the TP that doesn't. That's a single data point. It's the very definition of (outlier).

In math terms, it only has a confidence interval of 0.08. That's nowhere close to valid.

Where’s Air Force? Not in. Where’s Navy? Not in. That’s 50% of the non portal using teams. Clemson was gifted a spot. Can I use your logic to pay bills? Pay 50% and claim 100? Sounds like Biden math.

Which is why Clemson is a single data point, 1/131. Again, that is the poster boy for Appeal to Outliers. 100% of one data point is still an outlier, as is anything claimed that is based on it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So Clemson cant be used as evidence for either side of the Portal discussion?***

Seriously this is what’s on your mind after us not ever beating Shane Beamer at DV? Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled we get a shot at the pitiful ACC, but the portal is hurting us and portal players helped the stupid coots beat us. And poor kids seeing our multimillionaire coach taking his stand against the portal and $ for them is hurting our recruiting. And that’s what many of them see. I know first hand.
