Love these clips! keep up great work

I would pay big money to be able to rewatch the game and have every play broken down coaches/commentators telling me who the personal were and who did what right. I will settle for this and what Tigerillustrated provides. Thanks again,

We should just forfeit the rest of the games!!! ( tongue firmly implanted in cheek)
There have been 2 games since Wake Forest Syracuse and GT That does not necessarily make a trend.
BTW Clemson did win the game Saturday so even though you seem to think NC State played better than Clemson I guess Clemson Graded ahead of NC State.

Obvious: NCSt was More Consistent!

Nov 6, 2017, 6:07 PM

Yes, NCSt did play a more consistent game than Clemson. Had it not been for a couple of large plays by Feaster and McCloud, we would have been in a world of hurt. It has been easy to see that the coaches have had a change of thinking since the NChamp... They really didn't develop the passing of Kelly over this season, relying on the defense to carry them across the line over most of the games. And on Kelly's running beyond that. WHY, you may ask? I have no frigging idea. While other teams have been playing all-out for the season, it has been as if they didn't want to scratch below the surface of the team... so as to not tire them out or worry them with too many plays. I don't understand it... never have. And Yes, I know... that is why I am not the coach! What can I say... Fans often see things that doesn't seem to register with the coaches.

KB's passing is a lot better than last year, but there was a lot of room for improvement. KB's decision making is excellent. He rarely makes a bad choice, even if he doesn't always execute. He doesn't panic when he gets in trouble. His legs open up a lot in the running game. That makes life easier for Feaster and ETN.

The biggest adaptation for the coaching staff is playing Feaster and ETN instead of Fuller and Choice. If DW4 were still here, Fuller gets most of the snaps because Feaster and ETN would have gotten him killed. Also, we have no good replacement for Jordan Leggett as a receiver. Still waiting on Deon Cain to become the next Mike Williams.

We're going more ball control than up tempo, so we're not going to see the production we've seen in the past. (I remember when Tiger fans would complain that 38-31 was a sign that the offense was winning games for an inadequate defense.)

Hats off to the offensive coaching staff as they have adapted the offense to what we have instead of trying to run a system where we don't have the personnel. We changed our thinking on offense because we lost 6 starters on offense, including 5 of 6 skill positions.

line. Ifit had been a fake punt, he would have been wide open for TD. I still think he ought to be targeted more for red zone td passes - not one this year, and that is a shame.

And for some reason they put it on the one yard line, not the one foot line.

Noticed that, too. 2ft difference is a lot in the game of inches. Seemed like we got a whole bunch of left foot spots Saturday. Home field advantage I suppose or maybe full moon?

Unfortunately i agree with your grades. If this was the 1st game of the CFP, we would be definitely on the losing end. good news, we have plenty of time to improve. FL State will be interesting game as wonder which Tiger team will show up.

Early mistakes by both KB and the D threw them off their

game in the first half. KB did not want to get intercepted again, so threw it higher than normal. D did not want to give up another long td pass, so became a conservative prevent team which always gives up a lot of yardage. Thankfully, the coaches got them back on their game during half time break.

Re: New Story: Second Look: Grading Clemson versus NC State

I would switch it. I would give the offense the D, and give the defense a B-.

We played a very good offensive football team. Their O-Line is the best we'll see all year (unless ND shows up on our calendar), and their QB may also be the best.

Besides our QB inaccuracies, our offensive gameplan needs to utilize the RB's much more. ETN is game changer, and for him to touch the ball <20 times a game is just dumb, but to have less than 10 carries is criminal.

Great analysis and clips!! Only thing I see is that in your clip on "State Blitz Blows up Third Down Play" was actually after State's kickoff after they had just scored to make it 31-28. After the onsides kick, Bryant carried 3 straight times and we punted with a little over a minute left. Maybe that explains why Bryant carried it every down on the last series since we didn't get it done on the previous series on third and short with the running back. I used to love the third and short with Boyd where we would bring the receiver in motion and fake the jet sweep and then just run straight ahead for the first down!! Not sure why we have gotten away from that but the coaches know a lot more about it than me. Go Tigers!!

Re: New Story: Second Look: Grading Clemson versus NC State

Actual final series:

1st and 10: Call is an option that involves a pop pass to Ray Ray or a pitch to ETN. KB keeps it, gets a block from Milan Richards, lowers his pads and gets and a nice gain of 7 yards. Good call, good choice. BUT Mitch Hyatt limps off the field.

2nd and 3: Keeper all the way. KB left with Crowder pulling and Richards and ETN as lead blockers. Crowder is hit in the backfield. Richards has to go around Crowder and is late on his block. ETN blocks nobody (the downside of ETN). KB hit at the LOS. No gain. If Hyatt is helping out on the left side, this may be a different story.

3rd and 3: ETN out, C.J. Fuller in. Call is an option with a pop pass to Ray Ray. KB sees the linebacker coming up to his left as Ray Ray comes in motion and keeps it. Gets his blocks, but there are more red jerseys than blockers and KB has nowhere to run.

Overall, good defense by NC State.

If KB gives it to Ray Ray AND Ray Ray wins the foot race AND Cain holds his block, this might have worked. NC State is expecting run all the way because an incomplete pass saves NC State a time out.

A gutsy call would have been a playaction and throw it to Renfrow because there was NOBODY in the middle of the field.

The key play was 2nd and 3. It was a good call, but poor execution. NC State dared us to pass on 3rd and 3 and we did exactly what they expected us to.

Re: New Story: Second Look: Grading Clemson versus NC State

Things generally are not as bad or as good as they seem -- these grades included.

Sure, the offense missed some early. But once Deon decided to start catching the ball with his hands instead of against his body, he did very well. I hope he continues catching the ball with his hands and being hungry to get the ball, because when he does that, he can be elite.

Play calling average; overall execution average; effort elite. Unfortunately, you need to have all three at the top level to be elite. Having said that, when your offense scores 38 points against a good defense, I think a C- is too low. C+ or even B- seems about right to me.

However, this season the play calling, for me, has been questionable. I don't understand that we don't run more when the backs are gaining good yardage. I also don't understand why we're always going up the middle. Remember the jet sweeps that Artavis used to run? It seems like with Feaster and Etienne those would be golden!!

The defense's effort was there this game, but they seems to be banged up right now. Teams have gotten used to our play and are exploiting our style. Their QB was on fire early and hitting everything in sight. Credit to them. But D+??? Nope. I'm saying C+ again here.

Special teams .. Slight bump for me to a B. Alex Spence is not confident and is side-footing the ball on his field goals. That increases the margin of error.. He needs to hit it with the instep and commit to it. His kickoffs are traveling further and Ray-Ray's punt return was priceless. Punt coverage was good.

I'll take the W, but we have some work to do. If you had asked me at the beginning of the season if I would take an 8-1 record going into the Florida St. game in the drivers seat at this point in the season, I would have jumped at that!!

Re: New Story: Second Look: Grading Clemson versus NC State

I have a question. Would you prefer to have a QB who knows the whole playbook but cannot execute but about half of it; or, a QB who knows about half the playbook but can execute what he knows very well? So if you know the receivers' routes, but can not get the ball to them, even when they are wide open, what good is that? Maybe Bryant will be able to get the ball to his receivers Saturday. I sure hope so. Oh, BTW, UGA's QB is a freshman. A really young one when they best ND. And Alabama's QB was a freshman last year. Are they better than HJ? Will DL get a chance next year? Didn't DW4 begin his freshman year, after Dabo saw the light? Same as he did in Texas. Enough said. Go Tigers.

I'll take the QB who has won every game where he has been healthy and is an O'Brien Award semifinalist.

ZC is not the answer. HJ has a lot of potential, but he is a true freshman and threw a troubling number of interceptions in high school. I am guessing that has something to do with why he's not the starter.

KB fed ETN right into a blitz, but at the moment he hands it off, he has no good options on the keeper. #98 has beaten Milan Richard on the edge and #58 is waiting for KB on the second level.

That's no gain with ETN and a 2-3 yard loss on a keeper.
