What you're actually doing is eliminating a skill from the equation, and pushing the game more toward pure luck. I will play the game as it is intended, which includes the critical skill of eliminating words, not just guessing words. If you want it to be harder just for the sake of it being harder, then go right ahead.

If the goal is solving the puzzle in as few guesses as possible, Hard Mode is effectively a one-stroke handicap.
I think of Hard Mode as doing it Bill Walsh-style, I plan my first two guesses to cover ten letters and usually stick with them (unless I get two correct letters, one being green, in my first guess).
I figure I'm sacrificing opportunities to get it in two but increasing the likelihood of not going past four.

Is just increasing your score, just because? Like, I think I'm smart and have a good chance of figuring this out, but I'm gonna set up the game to keep me from doing that, so I get a worse score, on purpose. That's fine, but it's an inferior form of the game.

If you're on hard mode, there's no skill in entering the letters you've already used. It really just come down to luck on the other letters. It becomes a game of luck, not skill. I'm not here for that.

a hard mode. Most of the people in my family group do not play it. I use it not because it is harder, not sure it really is, but that it makes me think harder about the next word vs having two words to start every time I play, if that makes sense.

But it will guarantee higher scores on average, because you're taking out one mechanism of eliminating words and arriving at the correct solution.
Let's take today. Right off the bat, I had _LA_E. This narrows it down to 13 words. If I'm on hard mode, then there's no decision to make except to start guessing words and see if they're right. It makes little difference at this point whether I have an IQ of 140 or 60. I could get it in 2, or I could not get it at all if I don't get the right one of the 13. I'm at the mercy of the random word selector.
But if I'm not on hard mode, there's a skill here. I need to rack my brain to input a word with my second guess that will eliminate as many of those 13 as possible. In this case, I chose BRAND, with four consonants that are all over the 13 possibilities. That gave me the B, and narrowed it down to 2 words, at which point I am not in a random coin flip.

I meant that no matter how smart you are, if you are in "hard" mode, your smarts aren't really a factor anymore. Definitely did not say or even mean to imply that people in "hard" mode are not smart.

after the fact it was 13 words. However, in real time I ran through enough possibilities in my head to know that there were too many to just leave it to luck.
My typical rule is if there are four or more possibilities I can think of, I'm still in elimination mode, not guessing mode. I got to more than four easily after one guess today.

I'm not saying I'm better, smarter, or more skilled than anyone. I'm saying that playing in Hard mode eliminates an aspect of the game that is intended in the design of the game, and also makes it, to me less fun and more frustrating.
Show me a person saying "screw this game" in the replies, and I'll show you someone who was relegated to luck because they were in Hard mode.
Anyways, I used about fifty more posts on this than I though I was going to...it was originally an attempt at humor, but seems to have been eventually perceived as insulting. That was never my intent.
