Names to watch

Jun 4, 2015, 12:17 PM

Monte Lee - CofC - The Cougars have more NCAA Tournament wins (four) over the last two seasons than South Carolina (two) and Clemson (none) combined.

Jim Toman (Liberty) - he will be on a watch list, but I've heard from numerous people that he isn't easy to deal with and just not a Clemson kind of guy. I had one former player tell me today that Lee is either going to Scar or Clemson, and Clemson better not screw this up.

Eric Bakich, Michigan - Has done really well with Michigan, recruiter behind a lot of the success Corbin has had at Vandy and he was here for one year.

Corbin - doubt he will take it but you gotta call right?

O'Sullivan - See Corbin.

What other names you think?

my thoughts on sully. his wife is from clemson. we know what that means. also read an article that there was 2500 fans at the florida regional final. was mentioned florida expects you to win but dont necessarily show up to support the team. i would make more than a call.

Re: I don't really think Sully is as big a reach...

Jun 4, 2015, 12:34 PM

I agree that Sully isn't too far of a pipe dream based on what's been mentioned in this thread and others re: support from fans & the school, etc. Florida baseball, despite the success under Coach O'Sullivan, will always play 3rd fiddle behind football & basketball down in Gainesville. However, I've also read & heard on more than 1 occasion that Sully (and Corbin, for that matter) are pretty loyal to Coach Leggett, so I could foresee that being the biggest hang-up regarding that hire. Would Sully want to come to a school that just canned his former boss? Maybe, maybe not. Guess we'll see soon enough.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe his friend and former boss.........

Your people are correct about Sully and Corbin. They are dead wrong about Monte Lee. He definitely wants the Clemson job. Don't know about the Dallas Baptist coach, but there is no way we hire Perno.

If the AD fired Leggett to hire Dave Perno, he needs to be immediately escorted off campus and placed on trespass notice.

My list...

Jun 4, 2015, 12:46 PM

These are the names I would at least grant an interview.

In no particular order...

Dan McDonnell, Louisville
Monte Lee, College of Charleston
Gary Gilmore, Coastal Carolina
Bradley LeCroy, Clemson
Kevin O’Sullivan, Florida
Jim Schlossnagle, TCU
Kyle Bunn, Indiana
Chris Lemonis, Indiana

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: My list...

Jun 4, 2015, 2:46 PM

Not a terrible list, except for a couple. Lecroy is totally unqualified. Maybe if he had had any luck as a hitting coach. Bunn has already been run off at Clemson and Alabama because he was universally despised by his players. He and the head coach at ETSU dang near got fired for the BS that went on there. Only way he landed at Indiana is the Citadel connection. Totally unqualified.

I don't believe in these "one year wonder" guys

Jun 4, 2015, 1:40 PM

like in basketball for every Shaka Smart, there is a Darrin Horn out there.

just because a coach has a good run in one tourney (VCU, Iowa) don't buy in too much. He could have lucked into a couple really good seniors that had miracle seasons that carried them through.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree. If it wasn't for the one season you would never

Jun 4, 2015, 1:45 PM

have heard of them.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's why you do a little research

Jun 4, 2015, 3:45 PM [ in reply to I don't believe in these "one year wonder" guys ]

and discover that maybe they aren't "one year wonders"

http://www.hawkeyesports.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/rick_heller_852997.html

Heller, a native of Eldon, Iowa, has been head coach at four institutions -- Iowa (2014-present), Indiana State (2009-13), Northern Iowa (1999-2009), and Upper Iowa (1987-99) -- leading his first three schools to NCAA postseason play. He led Indiana State to its first outright Missouri Valley Conference title in 2012. He led Northern Iowa to the 2001 MVC title and into the NCAA Tournament, the first regional appearance for the Panthers since becoming a Division I program in 1981. In 27 seasons as a head coach, Heller holds a career mark of 720-588-4.

In his first season in Iowa City, Heller helped guide the Hawkeyes to a 9-1 start -- the program's best start since 1940 -- a Big Ten Tournament berth and conference tournament win. Iowa finished the year with a 30-23 record for just the third 30-win season since 1993. The 30 victories are the most by a first-year coach in Iowa history.

http://vcuathletics.com/information/directory/bios/Stiffler_Shawn

In December 2012, Stiffler was named the sixth head coach of the VCU Baseball program. Prior to his promotion, he spent six seasons as the Rams’ pitching coach and recruiting coordinator.

During his 11 seasons as an assistant, Stiffler, has coached 29 MLB draft picks, 15 of which he personally recruited, 13 of those 15 were pitchers. He has coached nine All-Americans, two conference player of the year award winners, 44 All-CAA honorees and one Johnny Bench finalist (awarded to the best catcher in all of college baseball).

Stiffler's success as a recruiter has been a constant throughout his coaching career. In 2009 he signed a top-40 class for the Rams, ranked by Collegiate Baseball.

His impact at VCU was immediate, helping the Rams to the 2007 CAA title and 37 wins in just his first season. His mentorship of junior transfer Luke Pisker transformed into one of the most dominant seasons ever by a Black & Gold hurler with nine wins and 11 saves under his guidance. Pisker was later taken in the 17th round of the MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals. Three years later, Stiffler helped VCU claim its fifth CAA tournament title in 2010.

Since his arrival in Richmond, nine Rams hurlers have inked professional contracts. Pisker joined Mick Mattaliano (Baltimore Orioles), John Leonard (Kansas City Royals), Cody Eppley (Texas Rangers), Joe Van Meter (Texas Rangers) Robbie Andrews (Arizona Diamondbacks), Blake Hauser (Seattle Mairners), Kyle Haynes (Pittsburgh Pirates), and Kyle Pelchy (Tampa Bay Rays).

Stiffler was promoted to associate head coach prior to the 2012 season. During the 2012 season, Stiffler spent the second half of the season as interim head coach. He helped lead the Rams back to the CAA Tournament compiling a 16-9 record during that stretch.

Yes

Jun 5, 2015, 9:52 AM

I would have no problem with Hambone coming back. And he has paid his dues at St. Johns and they have a good baseball program up there. Pretty sure he could have had a HC job by now at a smaller school but I think he sees the big picture.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So the only coaches we have a shot at are from small...

Jun 4, 2015, 7:54 PM

programs who no major school is seeking. Sounds like the usual HC search since the Prez Barker era.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Barker?

Jun 4, 2015, 8:55 PM

That's the traditional Clemson formula. Either promote from within or hire from a smaller program.

To my knowledge Clemson has only hired from peer programs in the big three sports twice. John Heisman was hired from Auburn and Ken Hatfield was hired from Arkansas.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

From a program building standpoint, I would pick Monte Lee

Jun 5, 2015, 9:39 AM

if I were hiring. But, the narrow minded of the bored would never consider due to USC ties. Everybody had to start somewhere. You could rationalize it by saying he has succeeded in spite of that handicap.
