Excellent point. We hear that a lot from coaches & players both. Seems like if you were confident enough to get a scholarship to play for a national champion team that wouldn’t be an issue for you

That and just pour more salt into a wounded fan base. Perhaps Neff asked them to. But we always knew it wasn't a good fit.
Even though (we) tnet posters were told we didn't have a clue... just armchair coaches yada yada. I tried to find my post from spring 21 where the topic was discussed on why we recruited DJ, and why he accepted the offer.
At some point it had to be discussed with all parties: Did DJ want to learn our offense, or were we going to change our offense. In hindsight, it's obvious, neither. Still odd.

Not sure you equate our offense with his issues? Being able to process information quickly, accurately throwing a basic pass and making simple reads are required in any offensive style

Every problem is a leadership problem. DJ was never an RPO guy so they never should have offered him. He’s a great elite pro style qb so he needed to be in that type of system

I dunno how hard we recruited Bryce Young, but he was the stud out of that class, and would have fit our offense to a T.
But that didn't happen.

DJ ran just as much RPO I'm high school as we did when we recruiting him, that is, very little. We occasionally let a QB decide to run, handoff, or pass, but its not often at all. We didnt run an RPO with Trevor or Deshaun either. We're not now nor have we ever been predicated on RPO.

There is clearly appetite for DJ-related news. The day that a DJ article gets almost not response to clicks is the day Tigernet will post its last DJ article. Until then, they would and should continue to give us content that appeals to Tigernet users.

As a person I love DJ but I don't think it's fair to judge fans bc they don't want him as our starter. He struggled more often than not and in that regard it was a nightmare at times to watch. Anyone that dons the paw will always have my upmost respect & sincere appreciation. DJ had many many opportunities to win/keep the job. I hope he goes on to have a great career. I'm also very happy we don't have to watch his struggles in the RPO offense anymore. The split should be good for all parties. Time to turn our full attention to Cade & Vizzy. Go Tigers!!!

I truly hope the best for DJ in everything he chooses to do. And I agree with his thoughts that the Clemson system probably wasn't the best for him or his abilities as a college QB, but I do thank him for making Clemson his first choice while knowing that he would have to sit behind TL16. IMO that took courage and patients for him to commit himself to having to wait behind a guy that you know there wasn't a possibility as the new rookie coming in and sitting a QB with the talents that Trevor had, down. So I wish him every bit the success that his talents can take him. I would even like to see him have success at the NFL level, and even a game with him facing TL16 in a head to head match up. But rest assured if that ever happen, I would be pulling the hardest for TL16 having the victory in a 21-17 game to keep it exciting 👀😉

I guess one could say that the "patients" Cade exhibited far exceeded the patience of Big Stinko. After all, CK waited on an inferior quarterback to move on (to another college) before he could get his chance. Yet another example of wasted time when there are limited years for a college player. A la bresee Henry skalski etc... Moving on...let's go Tigres del sur!!!!

No need to call him names. He was a model student-athlete at Clemson, and gave us several years of hard work and a positive attitude despite significant stressors in his life.
Let's thank him for his time as a Tiger and wish him the best at Oregon State.

Was it cool when Judge Keller called Skalski a “do*che babe”? He only defended DJU because he knew every time he did someone would say something even worse about him. He’s an excellent troll but that’s all he is.

Not at all. The same. Riley would have scratched him for the next man up. In all honesty, not too many teams are running that offense anymore. Not college or pro. All teams want and need mobility. Unless you're a Bret farve or a Dan Marino and can read a defense in 1.5 seconds and sling the ball accurately...

True. I wonder how DJ is going to fair in a “Pro Style “ offense when he struggled making decisions and he is going to be sitting back there.

He has been nothing but class. Considering how much he was trashed by virtually everyone, not to mention his parent' nasty divorce, I'm not sure many of us who are much older than 20 would handle it with such grace.
There was a perfect storm of things against this guy: Covid, Streeter, WRs, the most injuries in the history of Clemson, etc.
I'm not saying he bore no responsibility - quite the opposite.
I just think it's really uncool to trash on the guy. He is still representing Clemson well.
It would've been sort of cool to see what he could've done with Riley.
In any event, let's be generous to the guy. We're Clemson. Let's be fans with class.

Maybe because their focus wasn't just trashing one student athlete like some folks seem to want to do, but they offered the option to take a step back and look at the bigger picture.
I personally feel the biggest issue was offensive coordinator- and has been since Jeff Scott left. I loved Tony Eliot and Jeff Scott combo, that was great, but after Scott left it became bland and predictable. It only got worse with Streeter.
Either way, this wasn't a good system for DJ, you can see he had talent but he's not an RPO QB. I hope the best for him in Oregon, and hope he doesn't have to deal with the classless fans that bash him week in and week out for not being perfect.

Yeah I'm not so sure of the talent other than the fact that he's really big and strong.
He throws a lame duck deep ball with practically no RPMs. I would bet my house that he had the lowest spin rate of all ACC QB's last year. That and poor mechanics (coaching, yes, but there are plenty of HS QBs with better mechanics than DJ currently).
He won't get trashed at Oregon State because they are used to sucking. We could revisit this in 7-8 months but no one will care because Klubnik will be leading us to another ACC Championship

And he got humbled because college football ain’t easy especially at this level.
DJ was terrible at running any type of option play or having to read the defense and that is the foundation of our offense. We had multiple turnovers because he was terrible at handing off and pitching the ball.
I think he could be good with an OL that can protect him and a system that is designed for a drop back passing quarterback. The pro style offense Miami ran in the 80s and 90s would’ve been a good system for him.
I hated him as our quarterback, I hated his attitude and ego, but I think DJ is a good kid and space from his father certainly helped. I wish nothing but the best for DJ in the future!

We didn’t change the offense for Watson and we didn’t change it for Trevor Lawrence. Unfortunately, DJ couldn’t run our offense. We had multiple turnovers that lead to touchdowns because he couldn’t make a simple pitch or handoff. Honestly it’s on him for coming to Clemson. It’s not Clemson‘s fault his skill set didn’t fit our offense. Based on his high school film it looked like he would be a good fit. But he wasn’t. He has to accept a lot of that blame because he knew our style when he committed to Clemson.

DJ isn't a fit for any modern offense that requires a QB to make quick decisions, go through progressions and be accurate on short/mid-range passes. (I'm leaving out other stuff).
DJ fits Oregon State better because Jonathan Smith loves to run the ball and doesn't ask his QB to do very much. He is risk-averse on both offense and defense.
I watch the Beavers regularly. Some of their games last year were quite exciting. Seriously! This fall with DJ, I'll probably watch every single one.

Sorry but Clemson does have a role in his performance. Not knowing who said what to whom when he was being recruited, they should have either adjusted the offense to fit his skills OR benched him. It's still difficult to comprehend the difference between his first year's performance at ND and versus Boston College with his last few games. I'm sure much of it was "in his head" as the pressure continued for him to turn things around but the kid is not totally responsible for the product on the field. I'm looking forward to seeing what he does at Oregon State and will be pulling for him to succeed...

Oregon State pro-style offense attack??? ### is he talking about ??? Is this a QB run 3 downs and throw a 10 yd pass on occasion, which may be completed 50% of the time. LMFAO The only thing he could do was run on occasion and after a few of these the Defense had him figured out and shut that down also !!! LOL Good Luck to ya DJ

Interesting take. I think that [cough Tony Elliott's] Streeter's offense was vanilla all the way. TE did not adjust to DJU. From what I have seen, so far, and I may be incorrect, but DJU does not seem to be a "RPO" QB; he simply is too slow on the reads and with his feet.
That could very well be a symptom of our poor O-line, as you mentioned, and a non-adaptive system.
Without being a major ####, though, I disagree that DJU is NFL talent...I love the kid, I'm grateful for his time here, but he's got too many rough edges (from my armchair QB position).

That's more on us for recruiting him, than it is on him. But, that bad fit certainly put the brakes on our run in the CFP, and we have a lot of work to do to regain that plateau of performance.

out for him at Clemson, and I think he's a great young man who was well-liked and respected by his team mates. Hoping he tears it up @ Oregon St.

I hope he has great success at Oregon State but if that doesn't work out, I would love to see him pick up a baseball again.

When he was replaced in the lineup. This greatly affected the preparations for the Orange bowl for BOTH teams. The “if I don’t get to playI’ll take my ball and go home” Attitude is bush league and Imhopev he never plays another snap of college ball. And, I’ll bet he doesn’t play many. He was never great. Never.

I've never heard Dabo say so many times preseason and early in-season that a player with eligibility left was going to be moving on after the season.
I do not have hard evidence, but it seems as though there was an agreement between Dabo and DJ that DJ would either enter the draft or the portal after last season. That is the only explanation that Dabo was so sure that DJ would be gone. Dabo didn't even do that with sure first round draft picks in previous seasons that knew they were gone before the season ever started, so it couldn't have just been Dabo's optimism about DJ having success.
I also don't buy the narrative of "DJ never fit the system". DJ sure did fit the system as a freshman in his 2 starts and in his relief appearances of Trevor in blowout games. He was always a 1 read and check down guy, but as a freshman he came off of the that 1 read really quickly and got the ball to his outlet.
DJ changed to not fit the system. His processor slowed down and it made his lack of athleticism stand out and seemingly not fit the system. He started hanging on and waiting for his #1 option on pass plays and it made it where the check down was covered before he could get to it. It also slowed down his reads on run plays began he began to doubt what he was seeing on most plays. A pocket passer whose brain processes quickly can absolutely thrive in Clemson's previous system.
Unfortunately the pressure seemed to manifest into a mental block on his physical abilities by DJ's last game. The passes he threw vs UNC can't be attributed to "didn't fit the system" or "struggles to be accurate".
It was time for DJ to go. He did not walk out on his teammates. He did not bail on Clemson. DJ did the mature thing and gave everyone involved a chance to start fresh.
I hope that he can reset and access his physical abilities at OSU and regain some of his confidence.
I hope that Clemson and its fans can move forward without the cloud hanging over everybody waiting for something to go wrong even when things look smooth on offense.
