and I think that they do, Pres. Barker is trying to sell all the school land that adjoins the lake (school forest) to developers. Apparently he has decided that Clemson does not need to have a school of Life Sciences, Agriculture and Forestry and would like to see those majors removed from the Clemson curriculum. Another attempt to make us a Harvard I guess. I have supported him 100% for years but if this is true !!!!!

Agricultural College is stipulated in TG Clemson's will.

Probably against state law (since SC accepted the terms of the will), and I would hope the BoT would oust anyone with crazy ideas like that.

I think that it is also. He wants to change it to some kind of Bio Tech degree. I'll know more in a couple of hours. I am scheduled to be at a meeting at 5 30 where it will be discussed.

They own and control the land around Lake Hartwell so many feet above full pond, just walk around the lake and look for the red paint on the trees which is the property line

have heard discussion of developers for 99 year leases similar to some other lake developments in lower part of state.....in no way would CU ever totally sell the land....
but they do want to develop some of the property....but have heard it is 99 year leases.....no straight out purchase rights.....
in other words...if you had a piece of the property...and something was built on it.....if you die..your family can not inherit....it gets turned back over......so basically it is like renting......I believe they do this on Lake Moultrie

Clemson acquired that land from the Federal Gov.
Jan 31, 2013, 4:52 PM

for basically free under a Federal Law that said Clemson had to use the property for teaching and research. From what I was told when I was a Forestry student, it would literally take an act of Congress to use the land for development. That does not mean Barker does have a SC Rep that would slip this in some Bill that has nothing to do with Clemson. Maybe the Farm Bill that is coming up.

What you say is true. I have been very active in he Forestry school and alumni association for more than 45 years. I usually am made aware of what is happening. As I understand it, there isn't anyone in the departments who has the b!!!s to stand up to the president.. We will see what happens. I will know more soon.

It's not completely necessary though to have as expansive of a forest that we have. Of course, I hope we make a wise decision on the matter.

zoned as "Protected Shoreline" by the Corps of Engineers. That means no boat docks. Since 50% of Hartwell shoreline is already zoned for docks (most of any Corps lake nationwide), I don't see the Corps changing the zoning anytime soon. Note to any potential developers who may be interested.

Bad sources
Jan 31, 2013, 8:15 PM

The wife of a dept head (and even a dept head) are bad sources. Faculty, including dept heads make a career of accusing the administration of planning bad stuff. I know - I grew up with faculty parents and their faculty friends. Barker may not be perfect but he is a good guy and is looking out for Clemson. Plus everyone else is right. State owns this land now...
