Tired Of UP TEMPO, Spread offenses...
Dec 12, 2012, 10:44 AM
|

Up Tempo offenses are like having a beautiful girlfriend, sure everyone is going to think your the man but at home she cant cook of clean and is very expensive to keep. I mean look at the BCSNC, both teams play an efficient offense that balances both the passing and running attacks. Which in terms leads to their defense being rested for the series. Defense wins championships, it does at the pro level and it does at the college level. Give me a average girl who cooks, cleans, and helps with the bills any day.

Also, I prefer the blocking schemes of the traditional pro-style offenses over the weaker, less effective blocking of the spread offenses.
In general, spread offenses just want you to get a hat on a hat and move laterally with the defender, whereas traditional offenses want you to fire off the ball and knock their teeth out and move the defender backwards and out of the hole. This has many advantages, but the most obvious is the defenders' resulting timidness on pass plays.

really work that well anyway. It usually sputtered out, which is when they simply went to shotgun, 4 wides and said "Cam, throw the deep ball". If you look at our game against them, this is clearly what happened. We shut them down until they just started launching it every play.
I said Auburn would collapse after Cam left because their offense is a gimmick, and it did.

And yet Auburn had Cam Newton. Oregon could consistently run the ball against anyone and had a playcaller who didn't crap the bed against good opponents. Johnny Manziel is a prodigy, and running that offense benefits you stats wise --- so that doesn't really help your argument.

I don't care too much for the spread either, but for us it has its advantages. For one, we have trouble recruiting top notch offensive linemen on a regular basis, so spreading the ball out helps with that. Secondly, just because Morris got pass happy on numerous occasions in the South Carolina game, does not mean that he can't change or a different coordinator can't be successful. The up tempo can go for all I care, but running the spread is a good system for us. Being multiple could also work.

Balanced? I dare you to find a more balanced offense that Clemson's offense. Now you may find a slower paced offense no doubt but you will not find many if any that is more balanced.

Our offense is very balanced. It sounds like you want an offense that is mainly a power ground attack instead of a spread. Those offenses are not balanced at all.

Notre Dame etc,(though not many schools in the country seem able to) shouldn't we run an offense that fits our personnel?
Had we gotten Gurley, we would have adapted to his skills and probably won the two games we lost.
I expect our offensive line to be much improved next year with all of the returning players including a few new options at tackle. Dye could give us some more power at running back. If we can finish strong with our recruiting of defensive players, our defense should improve dramatically next year and give our offense a few more at bats every game.

could probably opt to run a traditional offense, but we have more talent in the skill position rather than the talent and depth along the OL that these schools have. Also, don't have the depth and right talent at RB. We have to get the ball to our skill players as often as possible and that's what our offense does. It obviously works pretty good until we play against a good pass rush. If we would get a away from "balanced" and start running more to combat the pass rush we would probably win those games too.

I saw lots of 3 and outs by both of those teams this year. Defense doesn't get to rest on 3 and outs. Not buying your argument. Your defense is either capable of stopping the other team or not. If the up tempo team is forced to 3 and outs the D is only on the field for maybe a minute or 2.

Dec 14, 2012, 11:07 AM

ago has ABSOLUTELY no bearing on today. Can't go through life with 'what ifs'. If you haven't seen a change recently, then I don't know what to tell you. If someone could wave a 'magic wand' and make all the pieces fall in place instantaneously, these coaches wouldn't be getting the astronomical salaries that we're seeing lately. CU is only losing 11 scholarship Seniors this year, though some are at key positions. There are 13 JR. and 27 So. on the roster. The rest is 40 FR.(RS) and FR. though I don't know how many are on schollies. Some on T-net have dismissed that we're a young team but I think the numbers bear it out. Things are moving forward and I'm not going to lament the past.

The players were different, the coaches were different, the facilities were different (as if that has any effect whatsoever), the fans were different, the ACC was different, everything was different....
except the offensive philosophy. Back then it was called the "indy 500". Now it's the Chad Morris special. Whatever.
Know what else was the same? Bad defense.

That's where things are changing. Record setting years on O and now its the D's time to catch up. Losing both CBs didn't help with Scar game, but they didn't rush on us other than draws and scrambles. That can be corrected. As to the secondary, it certainly needs an influx of size, speed, and aggressiveness. That is the major question going into next year. And no matter what, leave someone 'home' in the middle of the field.

I agree, but you could also point to Auburn v/s Oregon.

Both were offensive teams.
I guess there is no right answer, or everyone would be doing the exact same thing.

Auburn could get after the quarterback. Oregon, despite being a "spread" team...ran the football a lot and ate clock.

Not sure how you can say that

It doesn't matter what offense you run if you run it correctly and have the right players. A power/trap/iso/etc. is the same regardless of where the QB and RB line up at.
Also how can you forget:
Florida and Ohio St. under Urban Meyer run/ran spread O's Auburn/Oregon both ran spread offenses in the '10 championship game Tamu just went 10-2 in the SEC with a spread offense. Texas played Bama in the 09 NCG with a spread offense
etc, etc, etc.
Football is all about matchups and execution.

I'm tired of it. Give me a mean O line and a bruising

220 pound RB and a QB who has a decent arm and can throw in the pocket. On the opposite side, give me the most talented defense I can assemble.

I agree. Our O-Line would look a lot meaner in the right

scheme. Our defense would probably play better with more rest.
