It's the kind of thing that got us in Afghanistan in the first place. I hope, whatever we do, it's really, really targeted.
In general, terrorism is just whack-a-mole to me. I don't think the solution is killing people. I think that only makes it worse.

Ideally sending in a drone or tactical strike
Aug 27, 2021, 9:23 AM
|
|
would work. Up until yesterday, I was right here with you (in agreement).
I listened to a long video from Dan Crenshaw, and according to him that sort of strike can't really happen without people on the ground. He said that is a Hollywood fantasy.
Maybe he's being a war-hawk. I don't know. I don't doubt his knowledge of that sort of stuff, though.
He was also saying that once we fully pull out of Afganistan, we don't even have a very good way for drone strikes... Look at the bordering countries... we can't fly over Iran or Russia. Best bet according to him would be to fly out of Qatar (IIRC), go around Iran, over Pakistan into Afg.
Like I said, I don't know.

The GOP to run a somewhat moderate, non-geriatric, non-Trump acolyte candidate in 2024. That's probably wishful thinking.
I could maybe entertain Nikki but she has a lot of Trump stink to wash off and atone for.

A non-Trumpy guy would do awesome in a general election, but would they make it through the GOP primary anymore? The GOP is now the party of Fox, OAN, and Newsmax, and moderates are being cast out of the party. Actually I think even the center-right folks are now basically politically homeless.
The irony is that a competent center-right candidate would win the general election in a walk but probably couldn't win a primary right now.

You either get somebody crazy for the far right vote (like a MTG or Trump) or get a center of the road candidate for the moderate.
Thanks to Trump, they have split their own party.

Obviously the Afghan withdrawal is the current worry, but my biggest political worry right now is that every political idea, pretty much immediately, goes to one side or another. Then politicians get entrenched with fighting against good ideas because of party affiliation.

Who are the truly moderate democrats with a realistic chance to get the nomination? Bill Clinton was way more moderate than what the Democratic party has seen over the last 10-15 years.
In recent elections, Hillary, AOC, Biden, Kamala, etc. were nowhere close to moderate. They have some very far-left agendas. Obama was slightly more moderate than the AOC's of the world, but still pretty far left. Biden had some more moderate talking points, but it's obvious that it wasn't genuine.
If there hadn't been such a strong anti-Trump sentiment in America, Biden wouldn't have won.
From where I sit, the moderates on both sides of the aisle, and certainly the centrists, are left without a legitimate candidate to support.

Nikki Haley, Ron DeSantis (Gov of FL), Kristi Noem (Gov of SD), are all good people on the GOP side. I think any of them would do a great job.
For the Dems, while I'm not a Dem, I kinda liked Tulsi Gabbard. She was relatively moderate, very sensible and practical, a veteran, young, well spoken.
But the parties don't put up the best candidate, do they.
I just hope Trump doesn't run again. That would be a disaster for the GOP (and I voted for him each time - but he was never my first choice). I liked what he DID, but I never liked HOW he did it and his lack of leadership skills for the office.

Both major parties have lost their way.
Aug 27, 2021, 2:04 PM
|

Both have moved more extreme in their views in recent years, creating some extremism on both sides which I don't think appeals to most Americans.
Unfortunately, most people feel obligated to choose the lesser of evils.
As someone else in this thread stated, a more moderate candidate on either side would easily win a general election but is unlikely to win their own primary. That's so sad!
This is all a symptom of a society that is largely disrespectful, rudely outspoken, and generally lacking in compassion for others who think/believe differently than they do. Social media has played a large role in creating this, or has at least made it a lot worse.
