When I was younger, one needed a time under 2:50 just to get a ticket. I was able to scrape up the $$ to get their 6 times (so far). Due to the sub 2:50 thing, the typical field was about 5,000 and hard for older guys to get into. My first year ran 2:44 and finished near the middle as everyone there was better than me. I was ecstatically happy to finish in the middle.
The day before was a competitive 10K in downtown Boston. The main job of my Bride was to be on the 23 mile marker to give me strength to make it in. She knew when I would arrive at that point, and it was important to me not to be late a I knew she would worry. We always stayed on Beacon Street.
K would race the 10K the day before. Here is a photo in pouring rain as she killed it.

Anything under 3 hours is a terrific time ..... great job running a 2:44.
When I was in the Marines on active duty in Beaufort (1971) a group of my Jarhead buddies went up tp run in it. One of them who had played baseball at Arizona State and was a back set driver (NFO) is an F-4 Phantom, bought a new pair of running shoes the day before the race ..... and brand new brand called "New Balance" ..... funny looking shoe with a crepe sole. He ran the entire race without the hint of a blister. After that we all bought the New Balance shoe ..... maybe $25 a pair at the time!

My attempt to qualify and go under 2:50 for my first Boston was the Marine Corps Marathon at Arlington. K was going to run the first 7 miles where it doubles back and then be there to help if I finished.
She was not there when I came in on time.
Marines were running as a group, she joined them and could not stop. She said it was too exciting to stop. She ran the Marathon - "by mistake".

Tug .... my "marathon" came while I was in Marine Basic School at Quantico. My company went for our usual three-mile morning run, in formation, and when we got to the marker where we usually turned around we kept on going. We did not stop until we had circled the entire Basic School grounds ...... 9 miles ...... so that distance was about as much of a marathon that I wanted any part of. Kudos to you for running a real marathon ..... many times.
PS: When I gave up running and started riding a road bike, my bicycle club would have a ten-mile time trial at Donaldson Center in Greenville four times during the summer. Every time I rode in one at about the half way point riding up a long hill I would ask myself "now just why am I doing this"?

Excellent story and photo…and much respect for anyone who ran a marathon, much less the Boston marathon!
My apologies as I was trying to scroll down on my phone and I think I accidentally hit the thumbs down button! (is there no way to undo that?) 😬

My wife ran Boston in under 3h 30M. She is 55 marathons in, has done the Atlanta marathon every year. Done NY, Orlando, LV, Chicago, all the major ones. She is not into running like she was because she owns her own Hot Yoga studio here in ATL, but she ran ATL this year in just over 4h without training. She is kind of an alien though. I ran the Peachtree 10k "with her" last year, but I saw her for the first 30 seconds before she was out of my sight.

My hat is off to anyone who can even finish a marathon. I ran the half marathon here in Knoxville back in my early forties when I was still pretty decent. Now, I doubt I could even finish a 5k without walking. That is what a lifetime of running and football will do to your knees. Glad you can still do it.
