I was curious about the running game with each QB

Sep 23, 2018, 1:48 PM

at the helm so i did a little research this morning. I think the generally consensus here is that Lawrence's throwing ability opens things up on the ground for our backs, and it does appear that way watching the games, but i wanted to check the numbers to be sure. This is what i found:

With Bryant at QB

Etienne - 24 for 194, 8.1 YPC
Feaster - 11 for 53, 4.8 YPC
Choice - 6 for 35, 5.8 YPC
Dixon - 1 for 2, 2.0 YPC

RB Total - 42 for 284, 6.8 YPC

With Lawrence at QB

Etienne - 22 for 197, 9.0 YPC
Feaster - 12 for 77, 6.4 YPC
Choice - 9 for 22, 2.4 YPC
Dixon - 6 for 99, 16.5 YPC

RB Total - 49 for 395, 8.1 YPC

Adding in the QBs themselves

Bryant - 30 for 144, 4.8 YPC
Total running game with KB - 72 for 428, 5.9 YPC

Lawrence - 9 for 31, 3.4 YPC
Total running game with TL - 58 for 426, 7.3 YPC

As you can see, the total output of the running game has been nearly identical with both QBs, but the YPC average is substantially higher with Lawrence in the game. It's also worth noting that when Bryant is in the game he gets 42% of the carries vs just 58% for the backs while Lawrence accounts for 16% of the carries with 84% going to the backs.

Granted the sample size is still kind of small here and subject to variance (such as the 61 yard run by Lyn-J Dixon while Lawrence was in the game), but the only back that hasn't averaged more YPC with Lawrence in the game is Choice. So far the data supports the theory that the running game is more effective with Lawrence at QB. It also gets everyone else on the offense more involved since Lawrence is keeping the ball himself far, far less than Bryant.

I'll probably continue to track this out of curiously as long as we rotate QBs.

Really good post. I was interested in the breakdown and I even thought it might be higher with Trevor in the game

Bryant's default read is to keep the ball.

Sep 23, 2018, 2:32 PM

He's been like that all along. I'm not the only one that knows this and that's why people stack the box and risk getting burnt deep. A little more skill at reading defenses after the snap would make him very deadly.

Maybe he'll get there and maybe he won't. I know he won't without playing time and he's worked hard enough to justify the playing time he gets.

He’s a senior

Sep 23, 2018, 2:46 PM

If he was ever going to “get there” he would be there by now.

At this point the choice of #1 QB is obvious; the only question is whether or not to indulge a fragile ego... and we’re soon reaching the point where continuing to do that may cost the team the potential for success on the big stage.

Sorry, not sure how that happened.

Although Brice didn't seem to play well this game, you should include him in your numbers/research.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think there's enough data with Brice at QB

Sep 23, 2018, 2:54 PM

right now. It's only 15 carries and none from Etienne or Feaster. Dixon 10, Choice 3, and Rencher 2, and all of them have been deep into garbage time. It would really be comparing apples to oranges.

Brice, Luke Hunter last year was never in a game with the starting line

Am I on the wrong board? A post with factual data ? lol

+ 1, good post, looking forward to more as the sample size gets bigger.

Thanks for the info. That was a good post.

thanks for assembling the data!

This confirms what seemed to be the case - defenses respect Trevor’s downfield passing threat and loosens up the run defense.

+1 for the hard work to compile all of these stats.

My concern about stats will always be very careful using stats ONLY when making decisions. Stats can be manipulated too easily, and we all know that. If you're familiar enough with stats, you can make them say almost anything you wish.
